Facebook was working on the development of an AI system, when it suddenly decided to shut it down. This happened after things got out of hand, and the system developed its own language that humans couldn’t understand. Although we thought technology will never be able to surpass human knowledge, some systems might manage to get ahead of it.
The AI system created its own language
Several developers at Facebook were working on an AI system, when they observed how it suddenly stopped using English and, instead, it started communicating in a language it created. This wasn’t the first time when something like this happened, but it was worrying enough to convince the developers to shut it down.
This AI system created a language which might look like nonsense to humans. However, the computer was able to understand it and to use it to communicate with other systems. When they had been assigned a task, they started using this language and communicated with each other to fulfill that specific task.
Although what they said to each other looked repetitive and couldn’t be understood by humans, the systems were able to understand what they had to do. Researchers said they started from understandable language and invented their own codewords.
This poses some great problems for the future
Some say there’s no problem that AI systems are trying to create their own language, but that humans are not willing to learn it. On the other hand, this could be disastrous. We might never be able to grasp the full meaning of what they say, remaining completely unaware of what they are actually talking about.
At the moment, Facebook developers reset the AI system’s language back to English. However, all these agents are already quite advanced and have learned what they have to do. This might be problematic for many projects, as they will need to be shut down several times.
