Strategy Analytics has concluded, after a full, prosperous year, that Google’s Android has succeeded in being a leader in what sales and shipping are concerned, on a worldwide level. More than 80 percent of all sales that have happened around the world have been Androids. On the other hand however, Apple has sold less but earned considerably more money than Google. The comparison is fantastic: Apple in Q4 last year has accounted for 89% of all smartphone profits, gaining to $18.8 billion, whereas Android has been king over only 11% of the realm, gaining $2.4 million. The unfortunate numbers that Android has been presented with are hiding under a veil just because some other big companies such as Microsoft, Blackberry and Firefox have made no profit at all, so the Android has risen upon them all.
The big success of Apple’s “grades” is offered by the lean and consolidated method of designing, producing and selling the devices that is specific to Apple and that has gradually developed the brand worldwide.
Neil Mawson, research director for Strategy Analytics, has defined Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi as being “three big profit drivers” for Android. However, the biggest and most important one is Samsung, that is being sold and appreciated worldwide by customers of all ages and categories. More than half of all Android gadgets that have been sold last year are part of the Q4 2014. In the year 2013 only, Samsung has been able to account Android 95 percent of all profits, while Apple accounted for 57% of profit at that specific time.
The smartphone industry has been developing very much in the last years, and the differences between 2013 and 2014 are insane, taking into consideration that the percentage of evolution is of 31%. The Q4 of 2013 has shown $16.2 billion, whereas in Q4 2014 the complete sum has been of $21.2 billion.
One of the biggest differences between the iOS from Apple and the Android from Google is that Android has been spreading on the market with the collaboration of various brands that are always in competition. With the purpose of selling more than the other colleagues in the branch, the prices of gadgets often have to be lower than the others’, so the clients that are very sensitive regarding the prices, choose something else. On the other hand, Apple works only with itself, and it hasn’t focused on the critical mass in market such as the Android did.
As a conclusion, Strategy Analytics note that in the world of smartphones, Android’s gains do not equal Apple’s loss, but they might translate into Android losses down the line.
