If you happen to be a user, you have one day to replace the app with an alternative and remake your contact list. The buddy list cannot be saved or imported. It is worth noting that the dying app won’t transfer the list to another service by default.
After Dec 15, all data stored on AIM servers will be deleted permanently. Chat logs can be saved but the move must be done by Friday, the company announced. The good news is that aim-linked email addresses will remain functional.
In the 1990s, many people used the IM service to avoid phone tag. It was also very intuitive and user-friendly that offered a communications channel in a pre-Facebook Messenger era.
AOL Instant Messenger Overshadowed by Other Apps
Meanwhile, more and more user flocked to the alternative, FB’s Messenger, WhatsApp, Google Chat or Hangout. In 2014, it was quite clear that the service’s days were numbered when Apple shut down support for AIM in its iChat (the predecessor of today’s iPhone Messages app).
In October, the company behind AIM, Oath, announced that it is killing the service. In a lengthy post, it explained why the move is necessary.
As we move forward, all of us at AOL (now Oath) are excited to continue bringing you new, iconic products and experiences,
the statement reads.
Oat indirectly admitted that mean messaging apps have overshadowed AIM, so it was time for the company and fans to move on.
