Apple’s Unaesthetic Reserve Strap Is Too Unimaginative
Apple will release the new Reserve Strap in an attempt to address the complaints about low battery life on the Apple Watch. However, for a company that is famous for innovation and taking risks, the new product seems to be the most low-tech and unimaginative solution possible.
The Reserve Strap adds 30 hours of battery life to the 18 hours that the Apple Watch normally provides. The Strap is water resistant and does not affect the AppleCare warranty. However the cost for boosting the Apple Watch battery autonomy to 48 hours is estimated at around $250.
While the Reserve Strap is the most obvious solution for prolonging a Smartwatch’s battery life it is not the most aesthetic, nor the most innovative.
There is a massive market out there at the moment, specialized in customizing the Apple Watch classic band. You can chose virtually anything, from your preferred material, to the weigh, the model and most importantly, the appearance.
Millions of people want to be able to customize their laptop, Smartphone or Smartwatch’s appearance. So restricting them to a certain accessory that comes in only one model and three colors might make them less tempted to spend 250 dollars on it.
For the cost of $250 dollars per unit, the customer could expect a more high-tech solution, and there are several options out there.
The first thing that the company could have worked on in order to solve some of the Apple Watch’s battery life problems was to reduce the time it needs to recharge. The current time required for a full battery recharge is 2.5 hours, and it must be added that in the case of extensive use the watch’s battery can be depleted in as little as 3 hours.
Some of the competing Smartwatches have a much longer standard battery life, like the Samsung Gear S with a two day average, or the Sony Smartwatch with a listed 3 day battery life.
Apple could have invested more in the development of new technologies that enhance battery usage limits, such as movement recharging, Bluetooth or Wireless distance charging , or the expansion of the minimum battery energy using strap and screen integrated solar panels.
In any case, at this point the band is unattractive, low tech, and not at all friendly to individual customization. Therefore, spending money on it is just a matter of how much the customer finds the extended battery life necessary .
