5 Best and Easy Tips On How To Organize Digital Photos

December 1, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

If you are asked where your digital photos are, what would be your response?

Your most likely answer is you have them stored on your smartphone or perhaps in a cloud account or two. It’s also possible that you’ll say that it’s on your computer and then remember that you have it all uploaded to your social media accounts. Then perhaps, you’ll add that you have some unretrieved images from your SLR camera or some other flash drives.

Does this sound familiar?

In this day and age where just about every device can take hundreds or even thousands of photos, this is an all-too-common scenario. Thus, organizing photos can be a real head-scratcher or downright overwhelming. It’s a good thing that there are ways to organize digital photos and make it less of a chore.

Best Tips on How to Organize Digital Photos

Organizing your colossal photo collection might seem well, a colossal task, but it’s not really that hard. You just have to get in there and sort out the mess. Here are some tips to help you out:

1

Decide the Main Location for Your Photo Files

location files

You can start by deciding on a single location where you can dump all of your photo collection.

You really don’t want some photos saved on your computer, some stored in your smartphone, some uploaded in the cloud, and the rest sitting on your social media accounts. The main idea is to create a destination that will serve as your central hub for all photos you’ve taken and for future captures.

For your main location, you may use your computer or laptop, but you don’t want to use up your system’s hard drive and slow it down. So in this case, buying an external hard drive is the smarter approach. External hard drives are very affordable these days like the WD 3TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive which costs less than $100.

2

Create Folders

create folders

Once you have decided on a central location, the next step is to create folders that will keep your photos organized.

The simplest way to do this is to create folders for each year, and then create monthly folders within those main year folders. So for instance, you can create one folder for 2019, and within the folder, you can create 12 different folders for each month. Make sure that you name the folder by adding a number before the month such as 01-January, 02-February, 03-March, and so on. This is to make sure that the folders are in order.

Within each folder month, you can also create more folders for photos that are taken for a particular event or activity. For example, under the 06-June folder, you can have a folder like “John’s Birthday” or “Mt. Rainier Camping.” Be as descriptive as possible to let you know what’s exactly in a folder.

3

Delete Photos

Delete Photos

Sometimes, we just can’t help being trigger-happy when snapping photos in hopes of getting that perfect shot.

This is fine, but you’ll be better off learning photography techniques like the Rule of Thirds and framing. Fortunately, you can just opt to delete photos that won’t make the cut like exposed images or those obscured by the shooter’s thumbs. Also, don’t hoard photos that are basically the same shot or duplicates.

Don’t be afraid to delete photos not only to make your collection a lot easier to organize but also to free up storage space.

4

Use Keywords and Tags

keywords and tags

To make your photos searchable, change their metadata.

Metadata is basically the information embedded in every photo file like the location and date it was taken. Many images also list other relevant info like type of camera used, exposure, lens, and more. Adding keywords and tags to the photos themselves will make them easy to track down by simply using a native finder app on your computer.

For example, if you’ve visited Disneyland on several occasions, you may tag all your photos with a simple keyword like “Disneyland.” This way, you can easily find the photos even if they’re located in different folders.

5

Back Up!

Backup Files

While a hard drive is a reliable storage device for your photos, it can fail at some point (it’s a matter of when, not if). If your hard drive fails, you will lose all your photos forever – unless you create a backup.

You have several options to back up your files.

First, you can simply buy a second hard drive and manually copy everything. Second, you may use cloud storage services like Apple iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon Photos, and more.

Note that some services require a monthly fee or subscription.

These are just some of the best ways on how to organize digital photos. Organizing your photo collection isn’t that hard but it does require a bit of work.

Facebook Helps You Stay Spoiler-Free with Keyword Snooze

June 28, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Person typing on a laptop while a social website is open on the screen

Keyword Snooze blocks certain keywords from appearing on your news feed

Everyone hates going online before watching the last episode of their favorite show, since it’s full of spoilers. Facebook knows it and is now giving you the chance to run away from them. With the new feature Keyboard Snooze, you can select the information you want to know nothing about and keep it from appearing on your news feed.

Keyword Snooze is a method of filtering the news feed

Today, you might think it’s really hard to stay uninformed. The internet is full of news and, with the rise of social media, you get them even when you don’t want to. However, Facebook understands some people might want to avoid reading information on a certain topic, so it has just presented its new feature.

The platform will start testing Keyword Snooze, the tool that will filter posts based on the information they present. Most probably, the feature is meant to keep people from getting spoilers for their favorite movies and TV series. Also, it you find a topic disturbing, you can introduce the keywords related to it and Facebook will help you avoid this type of news.

The feature lets you block content for a period of 30 days

If you want to test the Keyword Snooze, here is how it works. Whenever you stumble upon a post you don’t like, you can tap the icon in its right corner. There, you can tap the Keyword Snooze feature that will pull keywords directly from the text of the post.

From all these words, you can select the unpleasant keywords and snooze them from your news feed. For the next 30 days, Facebook will block any post containing the keyword from appearing on your feed. Once these 30 days pass, the posts will start reappearing, but you can just snooze keywords endlessly.

Facebook has explained the Keyword Snooze feature is not about keeping people uninformed. On the contrary, this is an attempt to keep the platform as peaceful and friendly as possible. Therefore, when people stumble upon something they find unpleasant, they can just block this content from further disturbing them.

Google Abandons Uber Integration on Its Maps App

June 19, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Person looking at a map on a smartphone

Uber integration on Google Maps is no longer available on Android

Nowadays, ride-sharing apps like Uber have become a lot more popular than cabs, as they offer people a better riding experience. For a long time, you have been able to book such a ride directly from Google Maps. Now, the tech giant decided to make some changes and removed Uber integration from the Android version of Maps.

Uber made ride-sharing simple

For a long time, people have used cabs to ride from one point to another. However, the experience wasn’t always a pleasant one, as drivers could take longer routes or ask you to pay more for the ride. This is precisely why Uber appeared, seeking to make it more pleasant for people to travel through the city.

Apart from better service, Uber offers you a series of other features. After booking a ride, the app shows you how much time it should take you to get to your destination, together with a price estimate. It will also display a preferred route, so you can check if your driver respects it. This also allows you to change the route with a better one, in case you know one.

Google Maps abandoned Uber integration on Android

One great thing about this app was that Google Maps had Uber integration. Whenever you looked for a route from one point to another, it showed you what cars were nearby. Then, you could book a ride directly from this app. From now on, it will no longer be possible.

After showing you the available cars, Google Maps will display a button that launches the Uber app. If you don’t have it installed, this button will lead you to the Play Store, where you can download it. Since Uber integration is no longer available, it means you cannot book rides on Google Maps anymore.

Apple Maps also had Uber integration, but this feature disappeared for Apple users as well. Last summer, the company permanently abandoned this feature. From now on, it will take a bit longer to schedule a ride, but the process still remains highly accessible.

Google Adopts an Offline Translation AI to Serve You Anywhere

June 13, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Google Translate panel with the logo of the app and a globe drawing

The offline translation AI is more advanced and works in any conditions

Do you need to translate a sentence but don’t have any mobile data to spare? Google thought of this and found a solution to improve its Translate feature. This way, it will soon bring an update consisting of an offline translation AI that you can use anywhere, in any conditions.

Better translations with the Google app

Even if it’s not always the most accurate of methods, Google Translate has always been an incredibly useful feature. Over time, it has greatly improved, as the company developed an advanced system to operate behind it. Two years ago, it paired the feature with a neural machine translation (NMT) technology which significantly raised the quality of translations.

Here’s how the mechanism works to make things better. Instead of translating words individually, the NMT deals with sentences as a whole. Also, it keeps track of the whole context, thus providing the most accurate translations possible. Therefore, people can add entire paragraphs or even whole texts into the feature and translate them a lot better than before.

The offline translation AI lets you use the service anywhere

However, you don’t always have access to data, as you might be in a different country when you need to find out what a sentence means. Therefore, Google launched the offline translation AI that lets you use the feature anywhere. To do it, you can download your preferred language that should not take up more than 35 or 45 MB of space.

To use the offline translation AI, you need to download the Translate app first. There, you’ll find a special settings tab for offline translations, where you get a list of languages. An arrow next to the language you are interested in will let you download its pack. However, if you already have the app installed and you’ve used it before, you will get a message on your screen where you can download offline files.

For the next following days, Google will roll out the offline translation AI. The feature will be available for 59 languages, so you have all the chances to find whatever you need on the list.

Apple Pairs the Hearing-Enhancing Live Listen Feature with AirPods

June 6, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

AirPods placed on a concrete surface

Live Listen will turn an iPhone into a microphone and AirPods into speakers

Although it kept it a secret until recently, Apple will soon release an exclusive hardware update regarding the AirPods. The update in question is called Live Listen and will arrive at the same time with the iOS 12 software update. If you ever experienced trouble hearing, you might have heard of this update from Apple’s special hearing aid program. What it does it to turn your device into a microphone and the headphones into speakers.

Live Listen turns your smartphone into a microphone

Once you roll out the iOS 12 update, you will be able to enhance sounds by using Live Listen. The update is basically a software one, but it makes use of hardware components to function. More precisely, what it does is to turn the smartphone into a microphone that directs the captured sounds to the AirPods. If you leave your phone on the table and someone speaks near it, you will hear these sounds in your AirPods.

This sounds great and innovative, but the update isn’t so new. Live Listen first appeared in 2014 and it was specially designed for people with hearing aids. By using the tool, these people could listen to people talking from a bigger distance or in a noisy place. The option also allowed people to pair their hearing aid to their phone. From there, they could turn Live Listen on or off or control the volume.

Live Listen is ideal for people with hearing aids, but not only for them

What Apple did right now was to enable the Live Listen feature in AirPods, making the devices even better than before. Since the update can enhance sounds and capture them even in a noisy environment, it’s perfect for people with hearing trouble. Some might not need hearing aids, but a feature like this could be great.

However, you still shouldn’t assume you don’t need a hearing aid. If you really cannot hear properly, it’s better to go see a doctor. Live Listen and a pair of AirPods cannot replace a proper hearing equipment, so make sure you get professional help.

Facebook Is No Longer the Top Social Media Platform Among Teenagers

June 4, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Teenage girl browsing her smartphone while sitting at the table

According to the statistics, Facebook is no longer the top social media platform among teenagers

Facebook has been the top social media platform among teenagers for many years, and nobody thought another might soon come and take its place. Now, it turns out its popularity has started to fade among its younger users. A recent report developed by the Pew Research Center has revealed teenagers are now spending the least time on Facebook, with YouTube and Snapchat being the hottest platforms of the moment.

Facebook gradually lost its popularity among teens

Everyone can use social media but, just like anything that involves technology, it gathers a lot of supporters among teenagers. In many cases, they can decide the fate of a trend, with their lack of interest predicting a possible decline of the trend in question. This is quite bad news for Facebook, since teens are drifting away from it.

The report shows that 95 percent of kids between 13 and 17 have a smartphone. Therefore, finding the top social media platform among teenagers can say a lot about the platform in question. During the 2014-2015 survey, 71 percent of these teens used Facebook. Now, the service faced a sudden drop in popularity, with 51 percent of kids using it.

Which is the top social media platform among teenagers?

In contrast, they now use other platforms. For instance, 85 percent of them use YouTube, 72 percent use Instagram, and 69 percent use Snapchat. From all of these, the most visited seems to be Snapchat, with 35 percent. Then, it’s closely followed by YouTube, with 32 percent. Instagram lies quite far away, with only 15 percent, while Facebook occupies only the fourth place with 10 percent.

Therefore, the title of top social media platform among teenagers is disputed between YouTube and Snapchat. What is clear is the fact that today’s teens are no longer so interested in using Facebook as often as before. It’s hard to tell what this means at the moment. However, you can read the report and draw your own conclusions.

Google Wants to Kill Passwords with the Chrome 67 Update

May 31, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Man inserting a username and a password on a laptop

Soon enough, we will have to say goodbye to passwords

The future is here, as Google has brought a revolutionary update to its Chrome browser that might kill passwords soon. With Chrome 67, we might soon say goodbye to entering a secret code to gain access to a website. Google wants to implement a login that uses USB keys, a fingerprint or even a face scanner.

Google is about to kill passwords with the new update

In April, Google has announced the upcoming update for its browser, Chrome 67. Among all its other perks and features, the company mentioned it would also contain support for a service called WebAuthn. Now, the update has been rolled out for everyone, and it’s time to know what this means.

WebAuthn is, in fact, an acronym that stands for Web Authentication. What this service does is allow users to kill passwords or, in other words, to log in on different websites without using passwords they might often forget.

Websites need to run support for the web authentication service

The technology isn’t new, as it’s already quite used for some smartphones and tablets. However, there is a difference, as WebAuthn usually offers access only to the device itself. Therefore, Google had quite a revolutionary idea to include this service, but there’s still one step to complete.

Before you can use your fingerprint or a similar type of authentication, websites need to activate their WebAuthn support. However, since Google has taken this step, other pages will likely follow its example. In fact, there are many reasons why they should do it.

Using a password for security is quite a fallible system, since it’s easy to crack. In these cases, it’s advisable to come up with a complex code containing both letters and numbers. Unfortunately, this comes with another drawback – you can forget it really easily. Therefore, Google’s initiative to kill passwords is actually quite an innovative idea.

Say Goodbye to GIF Sourcing on Imgur, as the Platform Welcomes Video Content

May 30, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Imgur logo on a dark grey background

Imgur is about to welcome short videos on the platform

The popular platform Imgur is among the titans of visual content, from funny GIFs to posts containing random facts and even to the most obscure of memes. However, its founders decided it was time to go one step forward. After so many years of no audio content, the platform will soon allow videos, since we sometimes need to hear sounds to enjoy GIFs better.

Imgur used to contain exclusively visual content

Imgur has been the perfect platform you could browse stealthily. Since it only contained visual elements and no audio, you could swipe among the posts anywhere. This way, you didn’t risk stumbling upon a video that would blast sound in an inappropriate moment. However, this could also count as a disadvantage.

Some GIFs display images that will definitely be better with sound. In this case, what users could do was search the source video for the respective GIF and enjoy the complete experience. On top of that, a platform that supports video is a lot more appealing for advertisers. Imgur knew all that and decided to take measures.

The new strategy is beneficial not only for users, but also for advertisers

Therefore, the platform has just announced the start of its video support. Whenever you want to experience a GIF properly, you’ll be able to watch it together with its original sound. Fortunately, the change won’t be unpleasant, as all videos will be gathered in a channel called Imgur Unmuted.

The move was quite necessary for Imgur given its current context. In 2009, the platform became popular as gathering all kinds of both fun and strange visual content. In five years, it rapidly gathered 130 visitors per month but also started a $40 million collaboration for a Series A. At this point, incorporating ads was more than necessary. However, the platform tried to be as non-intrusive as possible and keep its initial spirit.

This helped Imgur acquire a better economical situation. The finances have only gone up, but the introduction of video content will definitely put them in a secure place. As mentioned above, this addition isn’t only great for users, as it will also improve the ad strategy on the platform.

Teen-Monitoring App TeenSafe Leaks Private Account Info

May 22, 2018 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Little girl playing on a tablet

Fortunately, hackers couldn’t access TeenSafe location data

After the Facebook scandal, many other apps have suddenly became victims of malicious attacks and data leaks, highlighting how delicate a problem security is. One of the latest victims of such an attack was TeenSafe, a platform that lets parents keep an eye on their children. This app has leaked private account information of several thousands of users.

TeenSafe helps parents keep an eye on their children’s smartphone use

TeenSafe is quite a favorite app among parents, as there are over a million people who actively use it. They like it since it allows them to keep a close eye on whatever their kids are doing with their smartphones. The app offers a complete picture of the smartphone use. Therefore, parents can see what calls their kids made, their browser history, location, apps, as well as social media interactions.

This is a great way to keep your children safe and be careful to what they access on the internet. However, whenever the privacy of your child is in danger, things are getting serious. A security researcher from the UK discovered the leak of TeenSafe private information belonging to thousands of accounts.

Hackers leaked private account data of the platform

Here’s how it happened. All this info was available on a server that had no additional protection. Therefore, any people who knew regular log-in information could access it without having to surpass some extra security steps. Fortunately, the TeenSafe officials intervened quickly. They started an investigation and alerted all users of the danger.

However, the situation is quite serious. Security researchers say the leaked data might have been gathered in plaintext form. This means that all email addresses and passwords for TeenSafe accounts are vulnerable. If you are using the platform, one way to escape an attack is to change your account information. In case your account has already been hacked, there’s one last comfort. Hackers couldn’t get data regarding the location of your kid.

Zemdegs also owned the previous record for Rubik cube solving

This Saturday, a 22-year-old Australian managed to break the record for the fastest time a person took to Solve a Rubik cube. Feliks Zemdegs calls himself a professional speedcuber, as he solved the cube in only 4.22 seconds. He beat his own record he established in 2017, the one of 4.59 seconds.

Zemdegs broke his own record at solving a Rubik cube

This weekend, Melbourne hosted a special ‘speedcubing’ event where people had to solve a Rubik cube as quickly as possible. The event, called Cube for Cambodia, welcomed a huge number of speedcubers who have earned different records over time. Among the participants, there was Feliks Zemdegs, the owner of the previous record.

So far, Zemdegs has held a series of other records. The average time he took for five solves of the Rubik cube was 5.8 seconds, and he earned this record in 2017. Also, the fastest time for one single solve was 4.59 seconds. Now, he managed to break his own record. He finished solving a 3x3x3 Rubik cube in only 4.22 seconds.

Zemdegs is a well-known speedcuber with thousands of followers and subscribers

The 22-year-old man offered no chance to the other participants. His impressive performance was caught on tape and it shows him sitting among other people and handling the Rubik cube. With swift moves, he moved all the colored squares until each face of the cube had one single color. Before you could see what he was doing, he was already reaching for the timer to slam it down.

People were somehow expecting Zemdegs to win. The speedcuber is one of the most important members of the World Cube Association. This brought him a huge number of fans who watch his competitions and his videos. On YouTube, he gathered around 300,000 subscribers, while on Facebook, over 90,000 people follow him.
