10 Best DVD Burning Software For Mac And Windows – To Burn The Data

December 1, 2018 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

There is very little doubt that the age of DVDs has long passed.

In this day and age, most folks would prefer to store their files and media through USB drives and cloud storage services since they’re so much more convenient. However, there are still many people that use DVDs to save their files due to their reliability and a lesser chance of being damaged or corrupted. Using DVDs is also a good way to back up your files.

However, unlike a USB flash drive or cloud storage services, storing data on a DVD is a little bit more complicated. You need to burn the data on the DVD by using burning software. Of course, you will also need a DVD burner or writer hardware to burn files on a DVD.

If you are looking for the best DVD burning software for Mac and Windows, then you’ve come to the right place. Below, we have compiled some of the best DVD burning applications that you can use to burn your DVDs.

How We Chose Our Ratings

Rounding up the best DVD burning software is never an easy task. There is no shortage of software that you can find online, both free and paid programs.

So how do we decide if a software is worth your time and money?

You can trust we have done our homework and have tested each application to give you honest and accurate recommendations. We have taken into account some factors like features, ease of use, the design of the interface, price, and many others.

Also, we have considered the feedback of actual users for each program we tested. After all, if a program has worked great for many people, there’s a good chance that you’ll have a similar positive experience as well.

Top 10 Best DVD Burning Software for Mac and Windows

We’ll divide our recommendations into two sections, for Mac and Windows. Let’s get to it!

Best DVD Burning Software for Mac

Burn

Burn

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

If you are looking for a no-fuss, easy-to-use DVD burner for Mac, Burn is an easy program to recommend.

Burn is a lightweight program but is surprisingly powerful. The program has four main modules: Data, Audio, Video, and Copy.

Data is for when you copy files from your computer to a hard drive. This is ideal for backing up files to a DVD. Audio is for creating audio DVDs and CDs resulting in a *.cda format, which you can play in your car and others. The Video module is for creating a DVD movie complete with interactive menus and themes. Copy is basically for “copy a disc or disc image to a DVD.”

One thing that I enjoy about Burn is the drag-and-drop interface which makes the software a breeze to use. You also don’t need to convert anything since the program does it for you during the burning process. Best of all, it’s free.

Disco App

Disco App

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

Disco’s main claim to fame is that the app actually emits smoke while you are burning a DVD or CD. It’s a completely superfluous feature but it’s still a nice touch.

Now for the features that are actually useful, Disco supports multisession burning and seamless disc-spanning (in cases where files are too big for a single CD or DVD), and provides a record of every session you’ve done so you can easily search and find the disc you want without going through your entire collection.

Disco also supports a wide range of CD/DVD types. The app supports CD/DVD-ReWritable discs for burning and erasing, even dual-layer DVDs. You can also create disc images from files and discs with formats like ISO, DMG, and CDR.

Unfortunately, Disco’s development has come to a halt since 2011. However, the app is still downloadable but it’s not guaranteed to work in all OS X versions. It’s a really great app if it works.

Disc Burner

Disc Burner

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

We got another free DVD burning application for you.

The Disc Burner program by CentroMedia is another lightweight burner but not light in features. Their website might not be the prettiest but trust us when we say that Disc Burner is one of the best DVD burning software that you can get for Mac.

This is a fairly comprehensive burner that supports both CD and DVD for burning music, video, data, and photo. That’s right, Disc Burner can burn photos to a DVD disc although it’s no photo slideshow maker for the Mac. It’s a great way to back up and protect your photos via DVDs.

Disc Burner is quite straightforward to use, and the interface is a joy to navigate. Writing speed is also fairly decent and you can continue working while it burns in the background.

SimplyBurns

Simply Burn

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

SimplyBurns is yet another free DVD burning program for Mac OS X users.

The SimplyBurns app is still labeled as beta but it’s a full-featured burning software and it works great. Upon launching the application, you’ll find five modules: Data, Audio, 1:1 Copy, Rip Disc, and Burn Image.

Of course, there are your usual Data and Audio burning functions for backing up your files and creating music discs. The application can also duplicate a DVD with just a few clicks. One interesting feature is the Rip Disc which basically copies or extracts the existing data on a DVD which you can save to your computer or flash drive.

Like all good DVD burning programs, SimplyBurns is very easy to use, thanks to its intuitive user interface. Writer speeds are pretty good and I’ve yet to experience an error while burning. Unfortunately, there’s no option to create DVD movies.

Toast 17 Titanium

Roxio Toast 17 Titanium - Complete DVD Burner & Digital Media...

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

Toast Titanium is one of the more popular premium DVD burners for the Mac.

As you can see, the Toast Titanium comes with a $ price tag but that also means it’s packed to the brim with features. Although many free apps can rival Toast’s burning features, the main strength of Toast lies in the video department. This burning software should be your go-to when it comes to making professional-looking DVDs with its advanced DVD authoring features. If you have the necessary hardware, you can also burn Blu-ray discs.

Toast has just about everything that you can get from a burning software suite. It can copy CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs. It supports MultiCam Capture and can record audio and video clips, and afterward, edit them using the same program.

Toast can also write encrypted data to a USB drive using the Roxio Secure Burn. This protects your private information with banking-level encryption (AES 256-bit).

Being premium software guarantees that the developers will support Toast Titanium by adding more features, releasing updates, and fixing bugs.

Best DVD Burning Software for Windows

Ashampoo Burning Studio

Ashampoo

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

When it comes to apps and software, many people tend to gravitate to a program that looks good and easy to use. Ashampoo Burning Studio is one of those programs.

Ashampoo is a name that sounds rather silly but the software itself is top-notch. Once you see its interface, you’ll think that it’s paid software. Ashampoo features a beautiful, well-designed interface that looks modern and easy to use.

You have the usual features like burning data, music, movies, disc images, and others. You can also copy discs and erase rewritable discs using the program. When it comes to burning discs, Ashampoo delivers all the necessary goods which are more than you can ask for in free software.

The only downside that we can find is that the supported formats are rather limited. If you want more features, you can get the paid version of the tool for around $15.

ImgBurn (Free)

ImgBurn

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

ImgBurn is a very versatile disc image burning utility for the Windows platform.

If you are dealing with a wide range of disc formats, then you should definitely check out ImgBurn. Supported formats include BIN, CCD, CDI, CUE, DI, DVD, GI, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG, and PDI. Plus, it can burn just about every digital media disc available from the classic CDs to Blu-ray.

ImgBurn offers plenty of options so it can become quite complicated to use. However, the interface is very simple with large graphic modules to help you out. It takes some getting used to but it’s really not that hard to use.

ImgBurn might not be the most user-friendly burning software out there, but that only means that this utility is deeply configurable. It offers a ton of features for the more savvy users. But that’s not saying that ImgBurn requires some coding knowledge because it’s still a fairly simple tool to use.

BurnAware

BurnAware Pro

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

Here’s another free software for you that doesn’t scrimp on features.

BurnAware is a basic burning tool that supports CDs, DVD, Blu-rays and dual-layer media. With this tool, you can create music, video, data, and bootable discs, as well as work with disc images. These features are pretty standard for most burning software, but BurnAware makes it all accessible so it feels more than the sum of its parts.

The interface of BurnAware looks very clean and sparse which is exactly how we want it. You don’t want to work with a software with lots of clutter that only leads to confusion. The interface looks very simple and easy to get around, so you can work with your task quickly and efficiently.

Although BurnAware is free software, there are paid versions both for personal and commercial use. It’s slightly disappointing that it doesn’t have disc-to-disc copying, and you’ll have to get a premium version for that.

CDBurnerXP

CD Burner XP

QUALITY

PRICE

RATING

$$$

You are probably thinking, “why are you guys recommending a burning software for XP?” Although CDBurnerXP has an “XP” in its name, it’s fully compatible with the latest Windows 10.

CDBurnerXP will burn anything that you throw at it like CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. If you have rewritable discs, you may also use the tool to erase data from the discs and burn brand-new data on them. It also supports disc-to-disc copying which is a nice touch for a free tool. ISO images are also supported so you can burn them to your discs.

Like most free software, CDBurnerXP looks very bare-bones with a fairly straightforward interface and few features. One drawback that we have encountered is that the utility requires the .NET framework which requires extra installation. Not really a big deal if you already have the framework installed on your PC.

Alcohol 120% DVD Burning

Alcohol-120

Back in the early 2000s, Alcohol 120% is a very popular DVD burning suite, and for good reasons.

Alcohol 120% DVD Burning is not free, but you can try out the tool with its free 15-day trial. When it comes to duplicating CDs and DVDs, Alcohol 120% is an amazing tool to use. However, it doesn’t have that many tools for creating discs from scratch. In fact, the steep learning curve of the software is its largest drawback. Performing the most basic burning task can be a challenge.

Alcohol 120% largely excels in copying DVD discs. We used the copy wizard to duplicate a DVD and the whole process took only a few minutes. Another good thing about Alcohol 120% is how easy it is to extract and create disc images like ISO. This can be a good thing if you’re looking to mass-produce DVD discs.

Burn Away

That wraps up our best DVD burning software for Mac and Windows.

As you can see, many DVD burning programs are free, so you really don’t need to spend a cent to create or copy DVDs. However, even the paid programs are certainly worth the investment if you’re looking for more features or for commercial use.

So what’s your best DVD burning software? Feel free to share your picks in the comments!

What Exactly is a Tablet?

In short, a tablet computer is a type of portable personal computer. While the specifics on tablets can range widely, there are some key features that all tablets have in common.

These include an LCD touchscreen, rechargeable batteries, and an operating system similar to systems used to run mobile phones.

In many ways, the tablet is functionally similar to a smartphone. The major differences between a smartphone and a tablet is that the tablets are larger in size, and may not have the ability to have access to a cellular network. Many tablets can be connected 3G or 4G, however, which closes the gap difference on many models.

Today every major company that creates consumer electronics is producing tablets in one form of another. The benefits of having a portable multimedia device over a traditional desktop computer usually outweigh a consumer’s hesitation on owning multiple devices.

There are, of course, 2 in 1 computer options, which merge the concept of a laptop with a tablet.

The game changer in the computer industry was Apple’s introduction of the iPad.

Due to the success of the iPad, tablets have become one of the fastest growing segments of consumer electronics. Ever since the iPad became available to consumers, the standards and expectations for the function and uses of a consumer electronics have raised considerably.

Tablets, specifically, have higher and higher standards to meet every year, with lower prices expected.

As the market has become saturated with so many quality and junk tablet options, it can be hard to know where to begin looking, or what kind of device would best meet your needs.

To help you in your search for the right tablet, we’re going to look at the RCA Viking Pro 10.1 2in1 Tablet 32 GB Quad Core reviews across the web. We’ll also offer some tips on choosing the right tablet for you, whether it’s the RCA Viking or another device.

Which Tablet is Right for You?

With so many tablet options, you’re likely struggling to know which one would suit your needs best. You should ask yourself these questions as you look for your tablet.

1. Uses for The Tablet

What are your exact needs in your tablet? Will you be watching movies or streaming YouTube videos all day? Or will you just be using your tablet to scour the web for cute outfits?

Will you be using the tablet to help run your small business? Will you be using the tablet to check email? Are you interested in replacing your laptop all together?

Do you need to have an easy-to-stow tablet that will fit easily in your purse or backpack? Do you need a keyboard for your tablet?

Thinking through all of the uses you expect to need your tablet for can help you determine a number of other factors that will steer you towards the right tablet. The more specific you can be about your needs, the more easily you’ll understand the right choice.

2. The Size of the Tablet

If you’re looking for a tablet to toss in your purse on the run, you’ll want a smaller model than the nearly full-size tablet options that function like full-on computers.

If, however, you’re more interested in word processing options, you should definitely consider a tablet with a larger screen that’s compatible with a keyboard large enough to comfortably type on.

3. Operating System

What kind of operating system do you need on your tablet?

There are three main operating system to keep in mind; Android, iOS and Windows.

Android/Google

Android is developed by Google and has all the advantages for a product created by such a robust company. Advantages of this type include support for multiple logins.

This feature makes the Google run devices that are great for sharing with your whole family. And thanks to Google Play, any app you buy for your Android phone can be downloaded for free on your tablet.

iOS/Apple

The iOS is Apple’s operating system. If you enjoy Apple devices, then you know what to expect with these more consumer-friendly interfaces.

Major plus sides are a user interface that’s simple and easily used by anyone newer to computers and electronic devices. If you’re more familiar with Windows or Android devices, you’ll have a minor transition period of learning the system.

Another advantage to the iOS is that the Apple app store is ahead of the competition for viewing media and playing games.

Windows/Microsoft

Windows tablets have software created by Microsoft. If you are planning to use your tablet for a lot of traditional computer work typically done on a laptop, then this may be your best bet.

The main reason for this? Windows tablets have Microsoft Office, which means you have traditional word processing as well as classic spreadsheets programs.

4. Tablet Features

What features are most important to you?

When looking at the various features that are offered in tablets, it’s important to think about the advantages of what is offered:

  • Wi-Fi vs 3G/4G access
  • Battery life
  • Processing speed
  • The type and quality of camera
  • Amount of available storage
  • Any additional storage capacity that can be added

There are countless accessories available with various tablets, as well, and should be taken into consideration as you shop.

5. Comparison

How does the front-runner tablet compare with others?

Before deciding on the make and model of your new tablet, you should go to a local store and check out various tablets in person. We’d recommend going to a few different stores, and then making your purchase after you’ve spent a little time in consideration.

Compare the features in person. Consider the weight and feel of each tablet in your hands. What’s most comfortable? Is the screen big enough? How does the keyboard feel?

You can also check out the brightness settings, screen resolution, included accessories, and included apps. Test out the virtual keyboard.

You can also take advantage of sales personnel and ask any questions that you haven’t found the answers to during your online searches.

6. Your Budget

What is your budget? Is there any wiggle room in case you find a better tablet for a little higher cost? Do you have anything for accessories, or does your figure include everything? Will you be getting a 3G or 4G plan?

Your budget is one of the biggest deciding factors for choosing the right tablet. You’ll need to set a basic budget to start and develop it from your minimum up to be capable of including accessories, data plans, or software and apps you’ll need to meet all of your computing needs.

Now that you’ve got a solid idea of how to find the right tablet, let’s take a look at the RCA Viking Pro 10.1” 2-in-1 Tablet.

building-o

A RCA Viking Pro 10.1 2in1 Tablet 32 GB Quad Core Review

The RCA Viking Pro 10.1” 2-in-1 Tablet 21 GB quad core review sites say the tablet features a 10.1” touchscreen. It has the Google Android 5.0 Lollipop OS, and has a 1.3ghz Quad-Core processor, with 32GB of memory.

The RCA Viking Pro has webcams and is both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. The product description on New Egg promises that this device has a powerful enough processor to be able to multitask both for fun and for business.

What is a 2 in 1 Tablet?

A 2-in-1 tablet seeks to combine the flexibility of a P.C. with the portable conveniences of a tablet device. In the instance of the RCA Viking Pro, the 2 in 1 function means it’s got a detachable keyboard so that the computer becomes a tablet.

The RCA Viking Pro tablet can be docked to the keyboard in a variety of positions for suiting your task at hand. While the keyboard comes with the RCA Viking Pro, many tablets do not come with keyboards.

What Do You Real Users Say in Their RCA Viking Pro 10.1 2in1 Tablet 32 GB Quad Core Reviews?

The Positive RCA Viking Pro 10.1 2in1 Tablet 32 GB Quad Core Review

Reviewers on eBay give glowing reviews for the RCA Viking Pro, with overall ratings of 4.74 out of 5 stars. The reviews point out a number of positive qualities of the Viking Pro, including a long battery life, and a good quality screen.

Another positive quality they praise is the clear, bright screen, and the easy-to-use touch screen. Many people also mention that the screen size on the Viking Pro is great for watching movies.

Some reviewers specifically mentioned that there were no issues connecting online, and downloading apps using Google Play was easy on the Viking Pro.

Commenters state that they feel the RCA Viking Pro is a great deal for the price.

Furthermore, reviewers say that the Viking Pro is durable enough to purchase for a child. It can survive being dropped.

The great design for separating the tablet from the keyboard is also praised by users. People say that the two separate easily without fear of breaking the device in the process.

Finally, users state that the Viking Pro is lightweight and easy to handle.

The Negative Review RCA Viking Pro 10.1 2in1 Tablet 32 GB Quad Core Review

While there were many positive qualities mentioned in the reviews, some people did have negatives to share. Many of these reviews seemed to indicate individual scenarios, rather than manufacturing flaws. These insights are still valuable to help others avoid the same issues.

Users on Amazon gave negative mentions that shortly after purchasing the Viking Pro charging ports both stopped working. Other said soon after purchase, the keyboards broke.

To save on manufacturing costs, RCA chose to build the case from cheap plastic. If you do purchase an RCA Viking Pro, be sure to purchase a case, especially if your kids may handle the device.

Some commenters said that the cheap plastic case feels uncomfortable, and that other brands feel smoother.

Some users stated that the keyboard is uncomfortable, and that the touchpad mouse isn’t very responsive to touch.

Additionally, the cameras on both back and front side are low quality. The cameras barely work for Skype and are horrible at taking photographs. This is not that unusual for a built-in webcam for a standard laptop, but typically, a better quality camera can be expected on a tablet.

Others mentioned that the onboard speakers are low quality. They stated that it’s difficult to hear anything from the computer/tablet, and that you need to use headphones.

Other complaints included:

  • 1
The 2 in 1 doesn’t include a manual on how to utilize the tablet’s features, or how to create documents and charts. These are advertised as features for the device, so the lack of assistance is disappointing at best.
  • 2
When compared to other tablets the RCA brand has screens that are easily cracked and scratched up.
  • 3
Some said that they had difficulty using the android operating system.
  • 4
One person complained that within two months the touchscreen became totally unresponsive.
  • 5
Certain versions come with batteries that don’t last very long and must be replaced.
  • 6
The power button for the device is located in a non-intuitive location.
  • 7
When one person had difficulty connecting this tablet to a Windows PC, support said that this particular Android device isn’t made to be compatible with any version of Windows.

What is Our RCA Viking Pro 10.1 2in1 Tablet 32 GB Quad Core Review?

Tablet

There are a lot of positives about the RCA Viking Pro, though some reviews were mixed on these features. Some said it’s highly durable, while others complained that they break easily.

We tend to believe it’s likely to be a bit shoddy. The price indicates a low-quality item, though, so we shouldn’t expect a premium item.

If you really need a budget-friendly tablet, and you don’t have kids, the RCA Viking Pro is an option. However, we’d only recommend for a fill-in or low-budget option, and not as your standard computing device.

Polaroid Tablet Reviews 7, 9, And 11 Inch Tablets – Brief History Of Polaroid

October 15, 2018 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

polaroid tablet

As Apple best put it in one of their recent commercials for the iPad, “What’s a PC?” We live in an era where the personal desktop computer is basically obsolete. Our mobile society that’s working on global citizenship in both political and literal terms, isn’t interested in being tied down to a desk, an office, or even a city any more.

Because of this on-the-move mindset, tablets are all the more important for maintaining our way of life.

As tablets have developed over the years, since the release of the iPad in 2010, we’re finding more of life can be lived fluidly. And nearly every electronics company on the planet has a variety of tablet models, even companies known for products like cameras and eyewear.

As you look for a new tablet, it’s important to examine multiple makes and models. To help in your search, we’re going to take a look at several Polaroid tablet reviews from across the web.

What Do We Say About the Polaroid 9-Inch Tablet?

A Brief History of Polaroid

As a company, Polaroid is world famous for cameras and film. The Polaroid camera became famous because it combined all the functions of a darkroom inside of a single portable device. This meant users could take a picture and instantly see the results of their photography.

In the 1930s and beyond, Polaroid was the “Apple of its time,” because of its incredible innovations.

Formed originally by Edwin Land in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1937, Polaroid’s initial market was based around polarized sunglasses that were developed from Land’s research at Harvard University.

Land was actively involved in the research, development, and applications of his company’s technology. Utilizing its patents in polarizer technology, the company made a name for itself with a wide array of products that included glare-reduction goggles marketed for dogs, and 3-D movies.

During World War II, Polaroid manufactured a wide range of military products for the armed services. These products included an early version of a device used for infrared night viewing.

However, it wasn’t till after the second World War that Polaroid released the product that made them a household name. In 1948, Edwin Land debuted the first Polaroid Land Camera. This is what we eventually came to know as the Polaroid Instant Camera.

Over the next thirty years, the company continued to grow, and released new and better forms of their trademark camera.

By the 1980s, the company was embroiled in a lawsuit with Kodak over patent infringement. It was also during this time that Land was ousted by his own company after an $89 million dollar failed attempt at introducing a Polaroid instant home movie camera by the name of Polavision.

During the 1990s, the company released various camera related technologies but had fallen behind the times, and eventually proved unable to catch up to their competitors.

Ultimately, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2001.

In recent years the Polaroid name has begun to bounce back. The name has started to be licensed out for use on products made by other companies.

Changes in Polaroid Products

It is important to always research what you are buying, especially when the company marketing the item may have had little to no say in the development, and production of the item. When a company was known for innovation and quality, putting that name to a product they don’t manufacture puts the consumer at risk of purchasing shoddy workmanship.

Because of these changes in the Polaroid’s licensing, we’re going to take a look at the tablets under their name.

What Do People Say About the Polaroid 7-Inch Tablet?

Positive Reviews

Polaroid tablet reviews on Amazon are split down the middle about this device. A little under 50% of consumers rated the Polaroid 7-inch with four or five stars. The rest of the reviews were pretty low.

The positive things mentioned in the Polaroid tablet reviews included the fact that the Polaroid tablet can easily handle the Android operating system. Some stated that they felt that the Polaroid 7-inch tablet can handle running several programs at once, including Facebook, Twitter and Netflix.

Others said that because of the inexpensive price of the Polaroid 7-inch tablet, they purchased them for their children to use. The device handles eBooks, games, music, and video well, which is generally all children do on devices like these.

Several new tablet users felt that the Polaroid tablet is easy to start and use and gave them confidence with a new type of technology.

Negative Reviews

Polaroid tablet reviews reveal one major complaint: the Polaroid 7-inch tablet is that the recommended USB keyboard and tablet stand don’t actually pair with the device.

Other complaints stated that the tablet drops Wi-Fi frequently. Reviewers complained that even when they were less than a dozen feet from their router, they could not get the device to pick up the WIFI.

Part of the device’s problem is that the built-in antenna is low quality and degrades in quality rather quick.

Another frequently mentioned complaint is that the battery drains quickly. Any attempts to multitask with the device will result in it being drained at an unreasonable pace.

Others complained that the operating system can run slowly and freezes up regularly.

Those who attempted to get customer service assistance had negative complaints as well. The interactions with customer service were stressful and resulted in customers getting in no help with their issues.

For those who attempted to get help online, they stated that the Polaroid support website isn’t laid out very well.

One reviewer attempted to solve their tablet problems by downloading updates to the drivers. All the update files downloaded from the website were corrupted and didn’t work.

What Do We Say About the Polaroid 7 Inch Tablet?

If you just need a media device for your kids, it would potentially do the trick at a much lower cost than many other tablets on the market.

Ultimately, the negative reviews outweigh the positives for the Polaroid 7-inch tablet and we’d recommend looking elsewhere for a new tablet.

What Do People Say About the Polaroid 9-Inch Tablet?

Positive Reviews

Some of the positive reviewers mentioned the tablet is great for playing video and music without hiccups. Reading high graphic materials, like comic books, works well on the Polaroid 9-inch tablet, and audio books and text materials work great.

Ultimately, the positive reviews given demonstrate that the Polaroid 9-inch tablet is quite functional as a media player.

Negative Reviews

On Amazon, 60% of users gave one star for the Polaroid 9-inch tablet.

Reviewers said that the tablet is slow while trying to download anything from the internet, or any sort of updates. Any attempts to load the app center are nearly impossible.

Various attempts to get apps from Google or Amazon were problematic, and the tablet could not properly install the program.

The device itself has extremely poor Wi-Fi. Holding the device even six feet away from router means no connection. Most likely, they have defective antennas.

Other complaints concerned accessories for the Polaroid 9-inch tablet:

  • There are no screen protectors available for the tablet.
  • USB keyboards advertised as suitable for the Polaroid 9-inch tablet does not work with the tablet.
  • There are no ports for utilizing any USB accessories, including the mentioned keyboard.
  • The batteries do not keep charge.
  • One Polaroid tablet actually caught on fire when the included SD card was inserted, and the device was turned on.

If those problems aren’t enough, consumers complained of terrible customer service. One customer mentioned that in the many attempts to get technical support, he was bounced around for hours, from operator to operator. Finally, the live person that was connected with the customer had an extremely poor grasp of English. The reviewer was unable to understand the speaker.

The average life expectancy of the tablet for those who could get it to work beyond a couple of days was, at most, four to six months.

Finally, the tablet reviews mentioned that it does not adequately perform its task described as a tablet. At best it seems to act as media player and not an actual tablet.

What Do We Say About the Polaroid 9-Inch Tablet?

Based on the significant number of negative reviews, and the highly limited positive reviews, we would not recommend purchasing the Polaroid 9-inch tablet.

Especially since the simplicity of the device pretty much makes it only usable for a child needing a simply media player.

What Do People Say About the Polaroid 11.6-Inch Tablet?

The sole reviewer who gave a 5-star rating for the Polaroid 11.6-inch tablet did not choose to elaborate on the favorite features or functions of the tablet.

Otherwise, reviewers on Amazon say polarizing things about the Polaroid 11-inch tablet.

Of the available reviews, some said that the tablet instantly had problems from the second it was taken out of the box and turned on. Many of these issues included:

  • Constantly freezing up
  • Being extremely slow when it does work
  • Apps regularly crashing
  • The tablet often rebooting itself
  • The tablet randomly cutting itself off while in the middle of being used.

Many reviewers returned the tablet within two days of receiving their purchase.

What Do We Say About the Polaroid 11.6-Inch Tablet?

With having so few reviews to pull from, and two thirds of the reviews being negative, we cannot recommend to the Polaroid 11.6-inch tablet.

Like the other two tablets reviewed in this article there are just not enough good things about this device to justify spending the money on it.

Polaroid Tablet Reviews Say: Please Don’t Bother

The once innovative name of Polaroid seems to have been tainted by these tablets.

They are being manufactured by other companies and sold under the umbrella of the well-known Polaroid name. This proves to be a misleading action by all the companies involved. Brand names are important, and can help you find quality products, so this feels a bit like false advertising.

Each low-quality tablet is rated only positively for use as a media player.

On top of the poor workmanship, the hassles of customer service for the Polaroid tablets makes them a poor investment. And with dangers, such a catching fire, and the complete lack of reliability of the devices, Polaroid tablets should not be considered viable options for purchase.

What is the Apple Watch?

The Apple Watch is one of the smartwatches we’ve been hearing about for a good long while now. The first smartwatch, which could be defined as a miniature “wearable” computer, dates back to the 70s with the first battery powered digital watch from Seiko.

What we consider a smartwatch today, however, is an entirely different animal. These watches are capable of running calculations, tracking fitness and health aspects of the wearer, keep track of calories burned while exercising, track sleep patterns of the wearer, and a whole host of other things.

Apple Watches stand apart from their competitors with a different styles, designs, and interfaces.

Apple Watches also have a much larger number of applications than many other smartwatches because of the proven success of Apples in general. These apps are more prevalent with Apple because developers are willing to take the risk on exclusive apps for Apple due to their success.

Apple watches come in a variety of colors and styles, including the $17,000 model that’s got red straps and an 18-karat gold case. Most of us will aim a bit lower for the models in the under $500 range.

The Best Apps for Apple Watch by Category

Health and Fitness Apps

WorkOutdoors

One of the best apps for Apple Watch in the fitness and health realm, the WorkOutdoors app will help you track your location and your training progress.

It uses your Apple Watch’s GPS service independent of your iPhone, meaning you can leave the phone behind on your workouts. The app features things like bread-crumb tracking, customizable stat displays, and custom points of interest along your routes.

The WorkOutdoors app is one of the most customizable fitness apps available for your Apple Watch. The data all translates easily to a number of fitness apps on your phone or computer for over-arching training and fitness tracking.

Streaks

Another one of the best apps for Apple Watch, the Streaks app helps you make small changes to life.

These small changes, like getting a few hundred more steps per day, or eating a few less calories daily, will make your life changes stick. You can use the wide range of data collection tools on the Streaks app for making these small habit alterations, a little at a time.

The Streaks App also lets you set reminders for walking the dog, taking your vitamins, or practicing a musical instrument. The app is designed to help with anything that will improve your way of life.

Gymaholic

For the gym rat, Gymaholic helps you track your gym workouts. You can manually log workouts through this app, and view tutorials on how to use the various machines at your gym.

Auto Sleep

The great thing about this particular sleep tracking app is that, like its name suggests, the app works automatically. Many other apps have to be turned on and off, and who’s going to remember every night to do that?

Since Auto Sleep does what it says, it’s one of the easiest sleep tracking apps to use. Even better, the Auto Sleep App is as accurate as some of the higher end apps, and can easily be adjusted for sensitivity.

Sleep++

If you’re looking for an even more bare-bones app than the Auto Sleep, you can try this free sleep tracking app for your Apple Watch.

You can view a chart that displays your sleep patterns and can send your data to Apple Health. It does not turn off and on automatically, though, so you’ll need to remember to start and stop the app each morning and night.

Pillow

Pillow uses heart rate, movement, and sounds to track your sleep patterns. The data is then presented in an eye-catching, easy-to-read chart. You have to manually start and stop the app based around your sleep times.

Travel and Commuting Apps

CityMapper

City mapper-sketch map

The iPhone app, CityMapper, gives point-to-point directions that can help you get around town in the car, or on public transit in any of the cities supported by the app. The Apple Watch version of the app is just as good at this, which makes it far more convenient for anyone trying to make quick or stressful direction changes.

Each step along the way is mapped out clearly, enabling you to get from point A to point B without all that extra stress of waiting for maps to load on your phone.

You can easily access information about your favorite spots, and public transit info for buses, trains, and even ferries.

Find Near Me

Find-Near-Me-Apps

This awesome little app helps you find the key places you need to go. Need a Chinese restaurant? Find Near Me will get you there. Need a laundromat, zoo, or ATM? Click on the list of places under the category you’re looking at, and the app will get you there with info on distance from your location.

You can also review restaurant reviews and contact info, along with directions to the place of choice.

iTranslate

Holding iPhone

If you’re traveling overseas, a translation app on your wrist is about as convenient and beneficial as you can get. You can speak or scribble into the app to find the information you need. The iTranslate app also helps with proper pronunciation.

App in the Air

App in the Air-Flight tracker

If you fly a lot, App in the Air is a great option for you. It tracks your information, like your gate number, gate arrival deadline, and directions to that hard to figure out gate location.

The app on your Apple Watch tracks the immediate information, but the app in your iPhone also keeps track of your frequent flier points, live status changes, flight history, and pretty much everything else related to your flying experiences.

Transit

transit application for mobile phones

If you’re like many city-dwelling Americans, this transit app is going to come in handy. The app assumes that any time you engage it, you’re in a hurry and need the information fast. The app provides instant departure information, nearby transit stop locations, and a quick and easy “take me home” button that gives you the best route via transit to return to your place of residence.

Transit can help save you a few seconds, which can make the difference between catching that train or bus or not, and having to wait around for a while before the next one comes.

If you’ve ever been late to meeting because of that extra two seconds it took you to get through the turnstile, you understand the value of a few seconds.

Transit is primarily for Americans but does work in over 50 cities outside of the United States.

Weather Apps

Dark Sky

If you’re ever had issues with checking your weather report, and then stepping outside in a light jacket when you needed a warm coat, you’ll love the Dark Sky app. This Apple Watch app tracks the forecast, for your personal location. Your immediate vicinity is where the Dark Sky works, not out at some airport twenty miles away.

Dark Sky will keep you up to date on the forecast in your area, including an hour’s notice of incoming rain or snow. You can also get a seven-day forecast.

Dark Sky is known for being more accurate than many other weather apps on the market.

Carrot Weather

The saucy Carrot weather app dishes out your weather forecast through customized settings.

This app isn’t for the easily offended, though, as the app actually laughs at any weather misfortunes you experience during your day.

Entertainment Apps

djay 2

The algorithms of the djay 2 let users turn their Apple Watches into a mixing machine like the pros use.

Your Spotify Pro account integrates your playlists and information, giving you a pretty much limitless supply of tunes for your party. You can use the app on your iPhone to intensify the results, or you can let the features on the Apple Watch app lead the way.

With the Apple Watch app, you can fade from track to track, add special effects, turn on auto-mix, or pause and sync your list.

Lifeline

Lifeline is a game app for your Apple Watch. It’s been described as a bit of a “choose your own adventure” on your wrist. You control the fate of an astronaut’s survival. You make decisions along the way, while the story plays out in real-time.

The script is humorous, entertaining, and intelligent, and keeps you engaged as long you stay tuned in.

FiLMiC Pro

If you’re more of a camera and video guy, the FiLMiC Pro is your Apple Watch app. You’ll notice some potentially low ratings for the app, but you’ll also notice not that many users have rated this recording app for your Apple Watch.

The FiLMiC Pro is a powerful iOS camera app used by film-makers, and journalists. You’ll just need a great editor to great professional level video with this stellar app.

Trivia Crack

A trivia game designed for multiplayer use, this straight forward game is perfect for the Apple Watch.

You play against real people, answering multiple-choice questions within a category you choose. There’s a pretty massive collection of questions, so you’re unlikely to hit the same questions for a while.

Runeblade

Runeblade, a game app for the Apple Watch, is an award-winning fantasy adventure game. You can get the base app for free, but of course, there are lots of add-ons you can purchase to improve your gaming quality.

Runeblade is a bit simpler than your typical role-playing game, or RPG, but that’s mainly because your Apple Watch is a simpler machine than a smartphone or tablet. Basically, that makes this a fun game for killing a few minutes here or there in transit.

Personal Finances and Calculator Apps

Pennies App

The Pennies App is a personal budgeting and financial tracking app for your Apple Watch. We love that you can keep lists, create a budget, and input values any time you spend or receive money.

If you’re rebuilding your finances, paying bills for the first time on your own, or in need of just getting that spending under control, the Pennies app can help.

If you need a constant reminder to keep your spending in check, you can set up the Pennies app as a complication for your watch dial.

PCalc

Reviewers have called the PCalc the best calculator app for the Apple Watch. The app had large buttons that make navigating the app easy on your watch dial. Overall, the app is easy to navigate and use. There’s even a third screen that can be used for doing your calculations on.

You can either do the paid version of the PCalc app, or go for the free PCalc Lite app, which doesn’t have as many features, but is still functional.

Calzy 3

A runner up to the PCalc, the Calzy 3 calculator app is a revamped version designed for the iOS 11 system. This calculator app has the operators on the same screen, which makes for easier calculations and less swiping. That means that Calzy 3 is a much faster app to use than others, though you’ll need a more precise tap on the screen to hit the numbers accurately.

Calzy 3 also keeps a running total while you do your calculations. Calzy 3 also offers some great features on the iPhone app, like a customizable keypad, and currency rounding.

Overall, Calzy 3 isn’t as comprehensive as some of the other calculation apps, like PCalc, but it is a great, basic app for calculations at your wrist.

The Best Apple Watch Apps

It’s important to track your health, your fitness training, sleep patterns, and eating habits. It’s also important to know what to wear as you step outside.

These awesome apps will help you do that, and keep you entertained while you wait on the train. One tip - be sure to keep track of your Apple Watch’s data capacity and don’t overload it to the point you can’t use it well.

Facebook Quiz App Exposes Data of Millions of Users

June 29, 2018 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

Quiz sign written in colorful letters on a black background

Nametests accessed and then exposed private data belonging to 120 million people

The data leaking problem is one of the most popular subjects of the moment, as many people saw how their data has been stolen from websites and social media platforms. If you thought all the new privacy policies would solve the issue, you were wrong. A security researcher discovered a quiz app popular on Facebook accessed a lot more data than it should have.

Facebook deals with another privacy concern

If you wanted to find out what you did in a past life or which Star Wars character you are, you might have unknowingly given access to way too much of your personal data. One security researchers discovered the popular quiz app called Nametests exposed private information on over 120 million people. Even after the deletion of the app, the problem persisted, so the problem was really serious.

This shows Facebook is still dealing with privacy issues even after the scandal with Cambridge Analytica. In fact, this company used a personality quiz, too, to obtain all the data on 87 million users. Back then, it accessed the info without their knowledge, and the Nametests quiz app did the same.

The quiz app leaked information on over 120 million people

However, this time, it’s not entirely Facebook’s fault. This privacy concern had nothing to do with Facebook’s privacy policy, as the website of the quiz app was the one with faulty coding. Fortunately, Facebook acted quickly to solve the problem.

The platform published an official post informing users of the vulnerability of the quiz app. However, both the Facebook and the Nametests developers worked together to solve the issues and prevent further data leaks.

The company revealed it acted on the issue as soon as the security researcher made the data public. He said he understood something was wrong when he saw all his private info being loaded on the quiz app website without any security measures. Then, he realized people could access the data if they had the link to his result.

Amazon Alexa User Gets Distressed When His Speaker Utter Creepy Sentence About Dying

June 25, 2018 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

Amazon Alexa smart device placed on a black surface

The strange incident might have been just an Alexa glitch

Over the past year, Amazon Alexa has made the headlines with some of the creepiest things it said. The situation is far from being over, as the smart assistant came up with another strange thing to say. A man from California watched as his Amazon Echo paused his smart TV to utter a disquieting sentence.

Amazon Alexa uttered a really creepy sentence

Another strange situation came on the list of creepy events involving Amazon Alexa. The ‘victim’ of this incident received his Echo speaker in 2016 but didn’t use it much for its designated purpose. However, he thought he could still talk to it randomly.

No strange events have happened so far until, on June 18th, he got terrified. As he was watching TV on his Amazon Prime account, his Echo speaker paused the program to utter a weird sentence. Afterwards, Amazon Alexa said “Every time I close my eyes, all I see is people dying.”

The speaker uttered the sentence on a perfectly normal tone and then said no more words. However, the incident was enough to scare its owner. He had no idea what could have prompted it to say this. When he asked Amazon Alexa to repeat the sentence, it couldn’t do it as it didn’t remember any such incident. Also, since it happened spontaneously, he didn’t have the time to record it.

Experts say these are only glitches

However, the experts are saying we shouldn’t worry. It’s not the first time when Amazon Alexa encounters some strange but funny problems, so this might have been just a glitch. In this case, they said Alexa might have recorded the sentence from TV and then chose to play it at a random moment.

Amazon Alexa has quite a long history with glitches that caused it to utter random phrases. For instance, in March, the smart assistant started laughing at its users for no reason. Then, in May, it recorded a conversation and then sent it to a contact in the owner’s address list. However, the creators said people should have no reason to worry about the speaker.

Videogame Startup Mighty Bear Received Important Funding Right Before its First Launch

June 21, 2018 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

Black Xbox videogame controller

Mighty Bear managed to raise an impressive sum of money for the release of its first title

Mighty Bear, a videogame studio that has risen from the ashes of King.com, is now getting ready to release its first title. The game that will come in mobile form has just received some new funds that will secure its flawless development. This adds to another successful fundraising campaign that ended at the beginning of last year.

Mighty Bear raised a lot of money in a short period of time

Mighty Bear is a videogame startup founded by four members of the now-closed Singapore office of King.com. To start their activity, these members needed some funding that they actually managed to raise in 2017. Back then, they achieved $775,000, which helped them start their first development sessions and hire 14 more members with experience.

The future looks bright for the studio, as it managed to strike a deal for another funding contract. So far, the Mighty Bear founders didn’t reveal any details, but the sum most likely has seven figures. Some rumors suggested an actual sum of $2.5 million, but the startup didn’t confirm anything.

So far, Mighty Bear has received the support of famous investors from Asia and Europe. However, if the founders wanted their games to start strong on the market, they needed connections everywhere in the world. Therefore, they started negotiating with North American companies, so they obtained this important deal.

The startup is preparing its first two titles

Now, the studio can take care of all the details before the release of their first title. We don’t know much about it, but the Mighty Bear founders revealed it would be a MMORPG. At the moment, they are running some functionality tests on Indian and Filipino users, but the game should arrive on both Android and iOS before the end of the year.

They are also working on a second title that should also launch soon. This strategy is really interesting, as the studio is planning to release both games more or less at the same time. Their audiences might coincide, so this will be an interesting movement to observe.

Apple Declares War to all Cryptocurrency Mining Apps

June 12, 2018 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

Three cryptocoins next to a memory card

Apple will ban all apps that perform cryptocurrency mining

Apple has just made its first clear move against cryptocurrency mining on iOS devices. The company has just brought important updates on its Review Guidelines that apply to the App Store, and they explicitly block malicious apps from mining. These rules will shortly come into action not only on iOS, but also on macOS, and they will apply to all platforms developed by Apple.

Apple decided to fight against cryptocurrency mining

This initiative started in March, when Apple identified an app that used the devices in an improper manner. Calendar 2 offered users premium features but only after it performed cryptocurrency mining on their MacBooks. Apple removed it from the App Store immediately, but the developer offered a different explanation.

The Calendar 2 dev said the app disappeared from the App Store for a whole different reason. Apps should not drain battery, cause devices to overheat, or consume too many resources. Apple didn’t reveal anything about cryptocurrency, and the developer claimed the app violated these rules.

Shortly afterwards, the tech giant decided to take serious measures against cryptocurrency mining. Therefore, it came up with some clear rules that apply to all apps across all Apple platforms. The first one allows wallets of virtual currency, but only if they were allowed by developers who must belong to an organization.

Apple will ban all mining apps from the App Store

Cryptocurrency mining will be allowed in a way, but not if it puts strain on the device. For instance, mining outside the device, like cloud-based mining, should be fine. Actually, Apple allows such transactions, but only if they come from trustworthy institutions and are legal. In the end, apps cannot give virtual currency away to users if they download their app or present it to other people.

Cryptocurrency mining has now become quite a serious problem. This happened mostly because third-party apps deliver virtual coins without permission, and because they used the devices to produce even more such coins. Therefore, Apple decided to remove all apps that perform such unlawful activities and let everyone know about it.

Microsoft Acquires GitHub for $7.5 Billion’s Worth of Shares

June 5, 2018 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

GitHub stickers displaying a cat-octopus with a human face

Microsoft is planning to keep GitHub as free as before

Microsoft started the week with some big news, as it made another valuable purchase. It turns out the tech giant has just bought one of the biggest platforms for software developers, GitHub. This platform is one of the most preferred places for developers to share their code, and Microsoft has just confirmed its acquisition for $7.5 billion.

GitHub is now owned by Microsoft

Microsoft has always supported developers and their creativity and freedom. Therefore, it thought it might encourage tech innovations by acquiring one of the biggest code-sharing platforms. Until now, GitHub had been an individual company but, for $7.5 billion, it will now be a part of Microsoft.

Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, has just announced the purchase. It turns out the company has paid the money through stock, being the most expensive transaction performed since December 2016. Back then, Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for $26 billion.

GitHub has been around since 2008, when it appeared in San Francisco. The platform offered software developers the chance to create and then share instances of code in different coding languages. This way, they can show others what they have been working on, as well as get inspired from other pieces of code.

Microsoft promises it will keep the coding platform as free as before

However, not everyone saw the GitHub purchase as a good thing. So far, the code-sharing platform has been a free open-source code library that allowed its users to do whatever they wanted. Now, some users fear that Microsoft might force the developers to promote some of its products. However, the tech giant felt the need to assure everyone the platform would stay just as free as it was before.

Therefore, if you are a faithful GitHub user, you won’t have to worry. From now on, whenever you are working on a project, you will be free to use whatever coding language and tools you like, just like before. Also, you can share it with anyone, for any operating system.

Acquiring GitHub was the perfect strategy Microsoft could adopt. The company also used to own a code-sharing platform called CodePlex. However, it quickly understood who owned the supremacy, and knew there was no use starting a competition. Since the acquisition, Microsoft’s shares have increased, so it was the best thing they could have done.

We're thrilled to announce that we've entered into an acquisition agreement with @Microsoft! https://t.co/4DezuXTJfV pic.twitter.com/LUZxjXFVVw

Pokemon Go Games Are Crossing Platforms towards Switch and Bringing a Lovable Pokeball Sensor

May 31, 2018 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

Pokeball on the floor next to a wall

The Pokeball sensor is both a controller and a sensor for movement and sound

Many people thought Pokemon Go was dead, but this is far from the truth. Niantic has just announced some exclusive releases that might really count as a huge breakthrough for the company. The game will cross platforms through two games specially designed for Nintendo Switch and will also bring a lovable Bluetooth sensor shaped like a Pokeball.

Two new Pokemon games on Nintendo Switch

If you played Pokemon Go from the beginning, you must remember that cute little sensor called Pokemon Go Plus. Whenever you passed a Pokestop or stumbled upon Pokemon you could catch, the device started vibrating to alert you of their presence and improve your gaming experience.

Now, Niantic has made great plans for the game and hopes to capture everyone’s attention again. Together with the video game developer Game Freak, Niantic decided to bring some special Pokemon titles on Nintendo Switch. The two games are called Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!

The games get an extra device shaped like a Pokeball

Also, they thought the idea of the sensor was a great idea, so now they are revamping that concept. The new extra device will be even more Pokemon-like, as it will look just like a Pokeball. However, it’s a lot more than an improved sensor. First of all, you can use it as a controller while playing the Pokemon games on the Switch.

However, the Pokeball Plus is even better than that. Niantic has revealed that, whenever you catch a Pokemon, the device will imitate its sounds and movements and you’ll feel it moving as if it were inside. Also, the sensor will light up with the Pokemon inside, thus turning everyone’s regular gaming experience into a magical one.

The companies hadn’t revealed exactly when it the Pokeball will be released. The two Switch games will be out on November 16th, so the device should appear in the same day. However, you’ll have to buy each item separately.
