NASA had big plans with its Commercial Crew Program, but it seems they will delay the program at least for three more years. They want to send astronauts into space from American Soil, but they have some technical problems. The General Inspector of NASA made the announcement on September 1st.
According to them, Space X and Boeing, contractors of this program, are having some problems which make the journey impossible for now. The problems were caused by vibration issues and challenges with the mass of the spaceship. The Commercial Crew Program is supposed to take the astronauts into orbit and then back on Eart. Boeing helped NASA by building a CST-100 spacecraft after they made a deal of $4.2 billion with NASA. Their spaceships will be able to have seven astronauts, but there will be only four. They need more space for deliveries. It is possible that the spaceships to be used for spaceflights in projects that do not involve NASA.
What are they going to do? Space X and Boeing will launch their spaceflights. One will not have humans on board. The other one will be piloted by two humans. The first company will use two astronauts from NASA while the second one will have one pilot from NASA and the other one from their company. They said the tests will not be ready until further announcement so we have to wait before we will see how the test will go.
NASA has so many plans for the future. They want to get people to Mars. Researchers stayed for one year in Hawaii, in similar conditions to those from Mars to see if they can survive. The project was successful, so we should expect to see people on Mars in the near future. There are so many things to discover there. It seems that the space agency is looking for options as life on Earth will be a problem in the future. We need to have a solution if something will happen and Mars could be a better chance for humans. Of course, this will not happen in the near future.
What do you think? Will the Commercial Crew Program be ready? What discoveries are you hoping they will make?
