Video games are quite a controversial subject. Some people view them as a waste of time, others as a therapeutic exercise, while other still view them as works of art. And depending on the game, all three groups can be right. So it’s normal for people to be excited when the sequel to a masterpiece is announced, and even more so when the creator of the original returns to the franchise. Raising everybody’s expectations of the game, original System Shock creator Warren Spector returns to the franchise.
There are many reasons for which fans loved the original System Shock, as well as its sequel. I’m not going to get into all of them, but I am going to talk for a bit about one of the main reasons – Shodan, the villain of the franchise.
I mention her because one of the very few things the main creator of the first installment said about his return to the series is that he is looking forward to finding out what Shodan is up to. This, along with the fact that working on the first System Shock was the most fulfilling things he has ever done are pretty much the only things Spector said about his return.
Since the brilliant mind behind such title s as, of course, System Shock, as well as the equally critically acclaimed Deus Ex is excited about returning to the franchise, it can only mean good things for the game’s rightfully unrelenting army of fans.
However, even though he went to OtherSide Entertainment in order to help with the highly anticipated System Shock 3, Warren Spector can’t really focus all of his creative genius on the project until another game on which he is working is finished – Underworld Ascendant.
Aside from working on at least three critically acclaimed franchises (Spector was also behind Ultima), Warren is also continuing his day job – teaching at the University of Texas. He said that he might have declined the offer, as he is quite happy with what he is doing now. Except that he just couldn’t pass on the opportunity to revisit the System Shock universe with the 21st century technical capabilities.
Many have been skeptical about the young OtherSide Entertainment company taking over the production of the 22 year old franchise, but since the original game’s creator s returning to the series, fans are starting to get excited about the project once again.
Let’s hope for the best!
