Netflix sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission last week. They asked the commission to make data caps illegal on wired internet connections and to ban low them on mobile connections. Netflix wants their users to be able to watch their favorite TV shows no matter where they are.
The company thinks that data caps discourage a consumer to use the broadband and it also makes more difficult for some people to watch internet television as long as they want. Netflix also things that data caps are raising the cost of using the internet connection a consumer has already paid for. This way, it is more expensive for people to watch internet television and most of them choose to watch their shows using illegal ways. The authorities should find better solutions for this problem, because what they have been used until now was not good for users.
It is very important for Netflix that people are able to stream as much as they want. The company is worried about what will happen if the data caps will be spread on fixed internet lines. This is already starting to happen. Comcast made some tests and put data caps in some cities, so people could use only 300 GB. However, users complained they need more, so they can use now 1TB.
The problem is that technology developed and now more people are using the internet and 4K videos. Netflix things that 1 TB is not enough for a person who wants to watch his/her favourite TV shows and also use the internet for other activities. The company is trying to convince the Federal Communications Commission that data caps should be illegal because users need to use the internet more than they did in the past.
There is no surprise that Netflix is against data caps. It has been against anything that makes the internet access more difficult for people. We will see if the Federal Communications Commission will pay attention to its request and what will happen regarding this matter. What do you think Netflix will do if data caps will not be illegal? Is it going to lose some of its users or people will still watch the internet television?
