Facebook, the most popular social network in the whole world, has bigger plans than ever. They are going to launch a program named Express WiFi, which should reach in India, especially in the rural areas. Facebook wants to release a pilot program of 125 rural public WiFi hotspots.
In order to achieve their goal, they have been in touch with Internet Service Providers from India. A Facebook India representative said that they are testing the Express WiFi program in India, that could allow customers to purchase fast, reliable and affordable data packages from their local ISP in order to access the Internet. They have not released the name of their partners yet, but we are sure we will find out in the near future.
This should come as big news for the Indian people, especially in the rural areas where the Internet was a major issue. The fact that Facebook chose the Indian market for this project does not come as a surprise. India is one of the most important markets for future of this giant social media network. There are more than 400 million people out there who have Internet access. This number may seem huge, but, in fact, it represents just a third of India’s population. So think of the potential that exists there.
That is why Facebook wants the Express WiFi to be a success. They are going to reach more and more users. However, they weren’t the first to think of this opportunity. Google has already been able to give free Internet to 2 million people in India. They installed hotspots on ten railway stations. This means that Facebook has work to do it order to take over the Indian market.
The government is also trying to help people have access to the Internet no matter where they are. They are going to install hotspots all over the country as they want to have one hotspot for every 150 people. What do you think? Will their plan be a success or Facebook’s strategy is better? India has a major need for a better Internet service. The expansion of Wi-Fi hotspots rose by only 12 percents in the past three years.
We will see if the Express WiFi will achieve its goal. Facebook hopes that this program will bring it more users as more people will have access to the Internet.
