As privacy on the internet has now become quite a serious problem, most websites and platforms have improved their security measures to protect the data of their users. Among the most common practices, there’s two factor authentication that guarantees things are staying safe. Now, Facebook decided to adopt the same strategy, and it won’t even require your phone number.
Why use two factor authentication?
Two factor authentication is a more secure way to log in on a website. Usually, those websites that adopt it try to prevent unknown people from breaking into your account. As a result, you get an extra step you need to follow before you can log in on the respective website.
This login strategy is really common among banks or email addresses. Two factor authentication works as following. Whenever you are logging in on your account from a device you haven’t used before, you will need to enter a unique code. This will prove you are the person using the account and will grant you access to it.
There’s a better alternative than using a phone number
Usually, you need to enter your phone number to receive this code, which many users found relatively unpleasant. However, it still guaranteed their account stays safe. Now, Facebook is going to use two factor authentication as well, and even found an alternative to phone numbers.
Security experts are advising users to avoid the phone authentication method as often as possible. As a result, Facebook will allow them to use a special app, namely Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile. These apps can send users unique codes for different accounts they use.
It’s true that two factor authentication isn’t too practical and consumes a lot of time. However, using only a password to secure your accounts isn’t really safe. They can be cracked or leaked anytime, allowing unknown people to gain access to your data. Therefore, it’s better to opt for such a solution.
