Reports have signaled that the European Union is planning to raise charges against American tech giant Google in terms of accusations of unfair strategies on the internet. With Google accused by EU of abusive dominance, the European officials stated that investigations have been going for some time. The antitrust commission affiliated to the European Union has a history of interventions to the policies of big names, companies with global relevance, in order to change the way they do business in Europe. Microsoft is the most recent case of such a company having to deal with European Union`s antitrust commission. Microsoft`s conflict with the EU commission finally finished in 2009, but it took a decade to end the divergences.
This time, Google is accused of abusive dominance in the field of internet search market. The EU officials highlighted that systematically has a tendency to favor the American tech company`s products in the case of users going online for shopping and using comparison shopping filters.
Analysts have expressed their opinion on the matter of Google accused by EU of abusive dominance. They have stated that it is very likely that Google will have to pay billions of dollars in fines, or even that the antitrust commission of the European Union will compel the tech giant to make significant modifications on the way they deal with online shopping in Europe.
Margrethe Vestager, who is in the position of EU Competition Commissioner has revealed the ongoing investigations and the accusations. She affirmed that the antitrust commission is very concerned with Google`s rather unfair way of promoting their own comparison shopping service. This would be in disagreement with the antitrust regulations approved by the European Union. Margrethe Vestager added that the commission is waiting for a response formulated by Google, in order to demonstrate that the antitrust commission`s view on this matter is wrong.
But Google`s comparison shopping service is not the only target of the investigations led by the EU commission. Margrethe Vestager added that the Android operating system, the apps and services developed by Google are also on probation. The official representing the EU Competition Commission has explained that the commission needs to make sure that the market in Europe is fair to everyone and that no development is hindered by anti-competitive constraints.
“The European Commission has asked questions about our partner agreements. It’s important to remember that these are voluntary — again, you can use Android without Google — but provide real benefits to Android users, developers and the broader ecosystem.”
Hiroshi Lockheimer, an official talking on behalf of the Android division has responded.
