Great new for the people concerned with children`s safety on the internet and while using the latest technologies, as Google Play launches new family friendly program.
Internet and tech safety is an ideal that we should reckon upon
The safety of children who take contact with the newest apps developed by big names in the technology field is a constant discussion all around the globe. Tech giants from around the globe, official regulator, tech experts and even enthusiasts share their opinions on how to make the virtual world a safer place for the kids. Children and teens have started to be more and more in contact with the latest technologies and software since smartphones, tablets and, more recently, phablets have come to know a never seen before development and proliferation. Almost every kid or teenager is almost constantly connected to such a device, as a recent study has shown, based on a survey which stated that the vast majority of teens are approximately 24/7 online, whether their presence on the internet is active or passive.
In addition to that, the gadgets that now know performances one would have only dreamed of ten years ago have begun to turn into more personalized devices, known as wearables. The smartwatch, which created a huge amount of fuss around itself is a proper example for such a category of gadgets. The wearables` newly create market and unexplored field has attracted the interest of the most important names in the world of technology and new ways of making them a common thing are currently and constantly developed. So it has become clear that our kids` safety is a matter which we should meditate on, and think twice before allowing a child get in contact with apps, websites and new technologies. And that internet and tech safety is an ideal that we should reckon upon.
Designed For Families
In order to achieve this target, Google Play launches new family friendly program. The new developer program is called `Designed For Families` and its main purpose is to allow applications publishers to accomplish a review of their apps so that they will be further considered as `family friendly`. Google has announced that the new program will be applied and will be part of its Google Play service. However, the tech giant has not yet made it clear on the problem of how the new Designed For Families program will be available once it is up and ready for use in the Google Play platform.
PBS Kids, Tynker and Crayola are among Google`s partners in creating a family friendly app marketplace. All of the American tech giant`s partners have a vast expertise in developing apps that have a positive effect on a kid`s experience with technology. For instance, they create apps that are characterized by a high quality and a clear purpose: both educating and entertaining the children, offering content that is considered to be appropriate to their age.
However, at the moment, such applications are amalgamated with other types of apps, which are not necessarily considered safe for the children, or in any way family friendly. Experts claim that this fact represents an obstacle in the parent`s attempt to choose an appropriate application for their kids.
Google has affirmed that there will be a rigorous process of determining whether an application would be labelled as family friendly or not. According to the American tech giant, there will be strict regulations and clear standards that an application will be needed to follow and meet, and whether it accomplishes that or not will be a verdict given by a thoroughly elaborated review.
“To support a more family-friendly store, developers are invited to opt-in family-focused apps and games to the new Designed for Families program. Apps that meet the program requirements will be shown in the new family experience so that parents can find suitable, trusted, high-quality apps and games more easily.“
Google wrote on an Android developers` website, as a comment to their new Designed For Families website.
The American tech giant and its partners have worked on establishing the criteria that will determine whether an app is labelled as family friendly or not. For instance, the apps will need to be in agreement with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection rule, also known as COPPA. They will also need to follow the regulations of the other entities which indicate rules concerning the kids` privacy. In addition to that, their ESRB rating must be `Everyone` or `Everyone 10+` or a counterpart to that, depending on the specific region.
Google Play`s Designed For Families is very similar to the Kids section that Apple integrated into its App Store some time ago. Let alone the set of regulations the family friendly apps will have to follow, advertising is not permitted in Google Play`s program, even if it is in connection to the in-app activity of the young users.
