Imagine this situation: you wake up one day and find out that you can’t play Pokemon Go anymore as the authorities decided that. Well, this may come as a surprise for some of you, but Iran is banning Pokemon Go, the world phenomenon. Let’s find out more about how this decision was possible.
According to BBC, The High Council for Virtual Spaces has banned this popular application because they think it could be a threat to the security. Although there were some people all over the world sharing this opinion, Iran is the first country to say “goodbye” to Pokemon Go.
The situation is still unclear as the High Council members did not say what is so troubling about the game. Even though, we know that the council’s concerns are more about robbery and trespassing, which can cause huge problems for the authorities. Also, they are not pleased by large gatherings of people as the regime in that country is very strict. So there are the main reasons why Iran could be banning Pokemon Go. Of course, here comes another question: will more countries take their example and say no to the popular game? Anything is possible especially in the areas where military actions are taking place.
Russia and China had already said their concerns about the game as spies could use it to gather information about national secrets. The game was also banned in Indonesia for those who are on-duty in the army or police.
It seems that the authorities from Iran wanted to ban the game for more than one month, but they wanted first with the creator of the game, Niantic. However, Pokemon GO has never been officially released in Iran. Thousand of people were playing it as they managed to download it. While Iran is banning Pokemon GO, Niantic released the app in 15 new markets, in Asia, including Indonesia or Thailand. Although the app was launched only one month ago, it became one of the most played games in the history. It has more than 10 millions players worldwide.
Iran banning Pokemon go should not come as a surprise. The Iranian government has already blocked popular social networks like Facebook or Twitter. So the situation does not seem very well for those who love using technology.
