According to a patent filing, the tech giant is working on a foldable smartphone that will let users have access to two screens at the same time. The rumor mill has had it that Microsoft will unveil the hand set next year.
Microsoft engineers argued that a foldable phone is necessary since the edge-to-edge technology when it comes to displays can no longer meet users’ needs. Samsung Galaxy S8 and the iPhone X are already using the tech, but users want more without the drawback of a bigger phone.
People familiar with the matter said that Microsoft is working on a “Surface Phone” that could fold to allow a second screen. The patent filing discovered by Windows Latest can only fuel the rumors.
Microsoft’s Foldable to Sport a Wider Phone Screen
The new design will have a special hinge that can connect two displays in a way that the hinge remains hidden while the phone remains flat when the two screens are working simultaneously to create a wider phone screen. The newly patented hinge will also enable users leave the phone unfolded at any angle.
The filing shows that the hinge is supposed to work in a smartphone that isn’t here yet. When the phone is fully opened, the two screens can act like a single screen. If you fold up the device, the device could be put to use just like a mini laptop.
Microsoft said that the invention was spurred by the growing demand for larger screens, with users seeking an enhanced mobile experience without having to buy bigger phones.
Microsoft is arguing that the so-called dual-display devices is the solution to the problem. Samsung is reportedly working on a similar tech too, people briefed on the matter said.
