When it comes to wireless speaker systems, Sonos is making a big name for itself, becoming a major force in the wireless audio market. The company’s latest is the sound bar speaker, a unit that will utilize a physical connection to create better sounds for your TV.
The Playbar is a speaker that takes the form of a one-bar, and it has nine speakers built into it delivering better audio when watching TV or movies. The Playbar will be available from March 5th and will cost $699, and while Sonos has made its name in wireless audio the Playbar will connect to a TV with physical components.
However, Sonos has not abandoned its wireless ethos entirely, and users who have built a wireless system of audio throughout their home will be pleased to learn that the Playbar can wirelessly sync with that network system.
“The room with the flat panel TV was always an area where we were not happy with the experience, flat panel screens are getting thinner and thinner and that is problematic for good audio,” Sonos said in a statement.
The Playbar packs a meaty audio punch, and gets its sound from six midrange speakers and three tweeters, while that connection to the TV will be made via an optical cable. Sound can be had from a TV, set-top box, and DVD/Blu-ray players via component cables. The Playbar is compatible with an array of audio formats including MP3, WMA, WAV, ACC, and FLAC, while as you would expect it also works with surround sound formats like Dolby.
If you are the type to worry about space then the Playbar will be a friend of yours thanks to its diminutive stature. At just 5 inches deep and 35 inches long it can be mounted above or below the display, making for a tidy device that will boost audio on your TV and will allow your set to be connected to your Sonos network.
