Facebook is clearly one of the biggest platforms online, offering a wide range of mainly anything, because it has stopped being just a social media a long time now. It is, obviously, the mother of all existing social networks, because it also bought and clearly will buy all smaller ones. Instagram for example is also part of Facebook and therefore related to it in all forms. Facebook is also a place to sell your business, because various hotels, SPAs, restaurants, cafeterias and shops are present on this social media platform, showing all their services and using the website as an advertising tool that clearly brings maybe most of their customers at the hour.
So what if Facebook began to be a marketplace by itself? What if it created the possibility of selling and buying items just like you gave a simple “Like” or comment to someone? This would most certainly mean that the amount of daily users on Facebook would raise like no other before. But how will Facebook make the change?
A new update will soon be available for this purpose. At the moment, there is already an official group on Facebook named the “For Sale Group”, where people are used to posting products that they want to advertise. Additionally, there are many other groups created in every country or even city or region, named differently that also sell specific items for those that live close to their address. People chat freely and meet to see the products or try them on if they are clothing elements. Unfortunately, the only option that the Facebook users have is to post various photos about their products and add a description along with them, but a more geometrical and useful tool especially created for this option hasn’t been created yet.
This feature has been compared many times with platforms such as Craigslist and eBay. But Facebook isn’t yet as famous as they are for this particular thing. Maybe it will be.
The new “Sell” feature on Facebook will give users the possibility to post an announcement about the product they want to promote, and then add a detailed description to it in order to make it as attractive as possible. In addition, a price will be also shown, if it is negotiable or not, and also the location from where it can be personally picked-up or other ways in which the buyer can achieve his desired product. Essentially, the new update is about structure, about organizing this opportunity and transforming it into a small business, if wanted.
Moreover, the possibility of marking “Sold” or “Available” as a tag of the products is also accessible. Also, clients will be able to visit the catalogue of a certain seller, viewing all his products, past or present ones. This is particularly a grand opportunity to small businesses that don’t afford on building an online presence through a separate website, and neither do they have any resources to have a shop of their own somewhere locally.
Furthermore, the new comments that appear on Facebook groups at every post raises that certain product up on the page, making all the other ones disappear fast in time and becoming very hard to be followed or even seen. The new way will make products appear just like in a catalogue and everything will become easier and more attractive to all interested parties.
The update will become viable in all forms: it will be available on the website, and on apps that are downloaded freely on the iOS or Android.
Facebook has made a public statement about the new changes that are about to happen.
“For Sale Group members can now choose the Sell feature when creating a post. You can add a description to what you’re selling, include a price and set a pick-up/delivery location.”
Another majestic project that has grown a lot is that of the professional musician Kadu Carvalho,a famous guitarist from Rio de Janeiro who created a Facebook group that helps other musicians from Brazil to buy and sell instruments. The credibility of the group is sustained by the fact that Mr. Kadu has a lot of fans through Brazilians. Facebook knows everything about the situation and it treats it like a favorable case that could assure the positive response that people have to the new update. Also, it believes that Facebook Sell option is a good opportunity for Kadu’s band to become even more known globally.
“In nearly three years, the group has grown to more than 34,000 members. Not only has the group enabled Kadu to personally buy, sell and trade musical instruments, it’s raised his profile and awareness for his band, Swell.”
Mashable has also presented the case of the new update for Facebook, saying that the interface is more organised for transactions. However, the editors on the site don’t believe that the new feature will be able to dethrone Craigslist though it “makes user-based commerce a bit more official on the platform”, as Joel Locsin from GMA News stated.
