Social media abuse makes more and more victims. Innocent people get harassed and offended by some other ones that don’t known their own limits. The CEO of Twitter, Dick Costolo, has written an internal memo about this issue, taking all the blame for all the abuse that is being made on some users and which unfortunately drives the harassed ones away from the platform. He takes the responsibility for everything, saying that “It’s nobody else’s fault but mine.”
The Gamergate tempest that happened last year has shown that Twitter doesn’t have many resources to handle the abusive messages of threatening ones on its website and app. The beginning of the tempest has been like a call for “ethics in video game in journalism” but in the end, it all remained connected to Twitter that has shown in time that it is quite slow in handling all its problems of this sort.
Another reason why the memo has been put out there by the CEO of Twitter is that an internal forum hosted a story by Lindy West, who is a common target of harassment of Twitter. Some tyrants have created a fake account and have made a lot of cheap comments about her and also about her deceased father. Evidently, the personal effect on this person has been devastating.
The memo that Mr. Dick Consolo has wrote, became public in The Verge.
“We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked at it for years. It’s no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day.”
He also believes that the abusers do everything on purpose, just to make the number of users that Twitter hosts as small as possible. However, Costolo promises that Twitter will begin to ban all accounts that make this kind of abuses and harassments, stating that it could be a good thing to promote a more civil discourse on Twitter.
Nonetheless, the number of Twitter users hasn’t dropped much despite the internal harassments. Twitter is about to deliver its fourth-quarter (of 2014) earnings report on Thursday, and the fact is that it has been doubling its gains quarter by quarter of an year.
Mr. Costolo added to his memo:
“We’re going to start kicking these people [trolls] off right and left and making sure that when they issue their ridiculous attacks, nobody hears them.”
