Self-driving technology was just a fantasy a few years ago. This has changed because this year more and more car companies were granted permission to test their self-driving cars. Companies like Google and Tesla are already testing and developing autonomous cars.
Another company which received permission to test their self-driving technology in California is Nvidia. The fact that they are known for their computer graphics cards made it easier for the company to receive the permit. Now that the firm received the green light they will start to test their innovative technology.
Nvidia has been partnering with different automobile producers such as Tesla. They built chipsets for Tesla and they also announced another partnership. They are going to create artificial intelligence chips for Baidu, a Chinese company.
Another great accomplishment for Nvidia was the unveiling of their newest self-driving technology, an open computer platform that can be used for autonomous cars. The name of the innovation is DRIVE PX 2 AI. The greatest features of this innovation are the single processor, the small consumption ( 10 Watts), and the surround vision. All of these is one product made by Nvidia.
Nvidia is a company that wastes no time. Only hours after receiving the permit to test its self-driving technology they started the tests. A Nvidia vehicle was seen in the Bay Area a few hours after they were granted permission.
Before getting this permit, the company made tests too. They used to complete their tests on different car parks or private roads because they were not allowed to use the open road. The California DMV has granted permission to more than 20 companies which built self-driving cars.
These companies are now able to test their products on the open road without having to use private roads or parking lots. Before self-driving technology becomes a usual technology several tests are needed in order to prove that these cars are safe.
The biggest problem with this type of technology is that nobody knows exactly if it is safe because some of the first tests ended up bad for the cars. Let’s hope that this is not the case for the Nvidia self-driving technology too.
