Sony finally announced the Xperia Z Ultra device during the Mobile Expo Asia 2013 event held recently at Shanghai. This device had been discussed at length under the tags of Togari and Xperia ZU and the speculations have all proved to be right.
The display is all of 6.4 inch by size and based on Sony’s very own Triluminous technology. The LCD screen with a resolution of 2 million pixel is full HD capable and users would get an out of the world experience viewing the images in all their true color on the screen. Video playback would also have its own additional viewing experience given the X-Reality Engine that is loaded on the gadget.
Writing on the screen of the Xperia Z Ultra for taking notes would be possible by using any form of stylus, or even a graphite pencil or a metal pen. Sony did not clarify if they would be supplying a stylus along with the device.
As for its specs, the Xperia ZU Ultra would have a Snapdragon 800 processor which happens to be the latest from Qualcomm. The quad core chip is rated at 2.2 GHz and would be complimented by an Adreno 330 GPU for the graphics part. The CPU during bench tests had returned very high figures and therefore the device is expected to excel in performance. Other than these the device would have 16 GB of internal storage capacity with a microSD card expansion slot option and a RAM of 2GB.
For battery backup, the Xperia Z Ultra would come with a 3,000mAh battery pack. Sony has had to limit the battery pack to ensure thickness of the device is just 6.5 millimeter. This makes the device to be the second slimmest after the Ascend P6 made by Huawei, the difference being just 0.34 millimeter between the two. So far as the battery capacity goes, the Galaxy Note 2 has a 3,100 mAh and the HTC Butterfly has a 3,200 mAh battery pack. Higher battery pack capacity would also mean a heavier device, which in case of the Xperia Z Ultra is 212 grams. For comparison, the Nexus 7 inch weighs 340 grams.
The device features two cameras with the rear one being of 8 MP and having Exmor RS Sensor which makes it prefect for HDR video recordings. The front mounted webcam is of 2 MP resolution which makes it enough for for video chatting.
The Xperia Z Ultra follows its earlier siblings with a glass back, frames of metal as also silver elements being popped in on some of the buttons like the power on button. The device is rated IP 55 and IP 58 so far as protection from water and dust ingress goes. Users can select from white, black and purple color.
So far as OS goes, the device would have Android 4.2 along with apps from Sony for customizing the UI. The gadget has been slated for a launch in the third quarter of this year, but no price details have been given till now.
