30 Million PlayStation Units Were Sold
There is actually no greater news for Sony than this: 30 million PlayStation units were sold around the world and we are talking about a milestone that was achieved before properly entering the holiday season. Let’s be clear: we are talking about a number of people who have a PlayStation 4, a number bigger than many countries’ population, a number that, again, puts Sony in a favorable spotlight and a number that could indicate that we might experience another PlayStation era just like the PS 2 one.
Let’s think about how the figures look a few months back. The PlayStation had already recorded 20 million sales. We can understand from this fact that Sony has a total progress of 1.25 million consoles sold every month that is outside a holiday season. Sony hopes that they will be able to sell an extra 17.5 million consoles by the end of March next year, which will do nothing more than help the company ascend in its number one console seller spot.
Comparisons with the Xbox One are very difficult to make, especially since Microsoft have declared themselves defeated at this chapter. On top of that, Microsoft have yet to release any reliable data since last November when they claimed to have sold 10 million Xbox units. There is no need to dive into the subject more than that, apparently, since a lead that that which Sony has would be very difficult to overtake.
However, the release of Halo 5 was rumored to have brought significant improvements to Xbox’s sales, October alone contributing to the increase of the entirety of 2015’s profits. We might expect to see some numbers from Microsoft’s part concerning this specific event. But, just in case you are wondering, if we are not going to see anything it means that even this apparently significant boost did not do anything that could put the PlayStation and Xbox on the same level.
If 30 million PlayStation units were sold and Sony is still positive enough to expect another (almost) 20 million sales it means that business is blooming and it looks like the PlayStation 4 is having an impact almost as good as the PlayStation 2’s. The PS 2 still remains Sony’s number one selling console, but you never know. Perhaps the year of 2016 might finally turn the wheel in a better direction.
