In a world that seems more and more dominated by all sorts of gadgets, devices and services that are meant to hook us forever and for always in front of our TV’s, there is no wonder that new such devices come up everyday. From Google Chromecast to Amazon’s newest set top – box, it seems that we don’t need any traditional cable TV anymore, as we have everything we want and then some!
Enter Aereo broadcasting service, a power some people have to watch their favorite TV shows, sports channels, sitcoms and TV series with a mere $8 a month. Aereo lets you see exactly those shows you’d see transmitted by air and not by traditional cable or satellite, convincing more and more people to cut the cord and switch to such services and even save some money at the end of the month. This is not a new thing, as we said, as by now, everybody is getting their entertainment fix from Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon, the whole difference being that Aereo broadcasting is incredibly easy to use and because it lets you record your favorite shows, pretty much like a TiVo. Well, this is better than TiVo actually, at it allows you to record two shows in the same time.
Let’s hear it from tech long time reviewer David Pogue:
The channel assortment includes the big boys — ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and FOX, plus CW, Telemundo, and a bunch of lesser-known channels like Qubo, Live Well, ION Life, and Cozi. You can watch your live or recorded shows on your computer, iPhone or iPad, Android phone, or tablet. If you have a Roku box connected to your TV, you can watch your Aereo shows on the big screen, too. Or, if you have an Apple TV, you can beam your Aereo shows to your TV from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
So this is basically a dream came true, as it is cheap, simple, intuitive even for the technologically impaired ones and pretty much gives you everything. However, there are some drawback to this too, as don’t imagine the Aereo broadcasting to be indeed perfect: it only works in 11 U.S. cities, but they say it will soon become available in 16 other cities as soon as possible. Second, the service is soul – bound to the city you live in. If you want to watch your favorite shows while traveling to another part of the country, you should have alternative solutions.
There are some issues to discuss regarding the relationship between Aereo broadcasting and the TV networks, which want to see Aereo on death row. Until that happens and we will understand better the legal implications of broadcasting, if you benefit from Aereo’s services, enjoy them while they last, as the Supreme Court will be very busy with Aereo and its services in the immediate future.
