Amazon started as an online book store many years ago. Since then it has expanded the business and became the world’s number one retail store. But that wasn’t enough. They created the first e-reader, the Kindle and moved on to creating the Amazon TV and recently they revealed the news about their first Amazon smartphone. Amazon is also a popular delivery service. Their latest service is taking home delivery to a new level: Amazon Prime Pantry. This is Amazon’s dry goods grocery delivery service that was announced on Wednesday and helps Prime customers receive their boxes of snacks, cleaning supplies, beverages and many more dry goods right at their doorsteps.
How does Amazon Prime Pantry work? The customers select the items they want to purchase from Amazon Prime Pantry website – items like potato chips, cat food, toothpaste- and Amazon fills a box and sends it to the customers’ home. The great thing about this new delivery service is that each box of items has a $5.99 delivery fee, regardless of how many items one buys.
Amazon further explains on its official website: “As you shop, you see that each Pantry item tells you what percentage of a Pantry box it fills based on its size and weight. Pantry boxes are large and can hold up to 45 pounds or four cubic feet of household products. As you check items off your list, we continuously track and show you how full your box is.”
Amazon Prime Pantry is not the company’s first delivery service. They started with a fresh grocery delivery system called AmazonFresh that offers hundreds of thousands of different items for free if it’s a same day and early morning delivery. The service has begun in Amazon’s hometown Seattle and has been on for five years but they wanted to expand to other parts of the US so they launched the fresh grocery service in L.A last June and opened a new one in San Francisco in December. But Amazon Prime Pantry is different than AmazonFresh because, obviously, it deals with non-perishable goods.
Amazon Prime Pantry – could this be the future of grocery shopping?
It seems that Amazon wants a bigger piece of the consumer package goods market, which is worth about $850 billion. Although the majority still buys the groceries from shops and supermarkets, the grocery shopping is moving online slowly but surely.
