Apple Switches Cloud Service Providers

March 17, 2016 By Micheal Baptiste Leave a Comment

tech giants to provide various types of web services

It is not unusual for tech giants to provide various types of web services to each other, similarly to how until recently, Amazon Web Services was hosting some of Apple’s cloud services. However, the most probable reason behind it is not some quality of service debate, but instead, Apple wishing to expand their cloud-providing capabilities for the time being. It is suspected that the switch from AWS to Google is merely temporary and has only taken place because it happened in an area where the two tech giants are not in direct competition.

Last year, Apple signed a deal with Google to receive assistance with some of their iCloud and other services, but the shift only took place recently; various publications are stating that Apple spent an approximate sum of $500 million with Google, although sources did not mention whether this is the expense Apple made with the switch from AWS to Google alone.

Meanwhile, Apple did not completely shift their remote iCloud services to Google but have also visibly diminished their reliance on the remaining AWS data centers. Some believe that this change is purely temporary as Apple has multiple personal data centers in the plans scheduled to go into action by the year 2017. Some of the locations that Apple is looking at are Mesa, Arizona, Ireland and Denmark in Europe. The last two will independently power Apple’s online services for the entire European continent, ensuring that all the core internet apps of iOS such as iTunes, App Store, Maps, Siri, and iMessage continue functioning properly.

It is very probably that Apple is planning to shift the entirety of its online services to their own data center. Analysts believe that Apple spends roughly $1 billion on Amazon Web Services on a yearly basis alone, under the circumstances in which AWS supports about 90% of its cloud business. In the circumstances in which Apple wishes to stop relying on outside infrastructure, the company has formed a team named McQueen that is concerned with this aspect entirely.

According to specialists, if Apple opens its planned data centers stated earlier, it could break even with the data center services that it has to purchase from the likes of Amazon and Google in roughly three years, at which point it would start running 100% independently. At least in what the iCloud services are concerned.

Amazon Web Services Introduces Mobile SDK

July 10, 2014 By Brandi McCants Leave a Comment

Amazon intends to maintain and develop Amazon Web Services. Cloud storage is a core component of the service, as we were reporting recently. The main advantage offered by cloud storage is mobility and interoperability. The same files are accessible from the desktop, laptop, smartphone, tablet, and maybe soon from smartwatches too. For now, because each device might run a different OS, there is a need for applications adapted to each of them. Amazon is obviously fully aware of the fact that it needs a platform dedicated to mobile app development decided to launch a dedicated SDK. Amazon’s new platform offers regular services like analytical software, notifications and data and file storage.

Amazon Web Services 2014 Summit which took place in New York was focused on providing a better experience for mobile users.

Amazon Web Services Zocalo file sharing

“Building mobile first apps means that you have to have a solid idea of the customer, you have to build engaging apps, and you have to measure relentlessly if you want to build better apps for your customers,” Vogel said. “But measuring on a mobile device is not easy.”, he continued, according to zdnet.com

Amazon Web Services comes with Zocalo Because users already have multiple profiles on social networks and other services, Amazon decided to introduce a synchronization feature called Cognito. Developers will have the possibility to allow logging to services by synchronizing accounts such as Facebook or Google.

Amazon Mobile Analytics will dramatically ease the access to the most important stats. A report on mobile app usage can be obtained in one hour. User retention stat is among the initial features offered by through the service, but developers will enrich the platform with new ideas further on.

Fragmentation is today’s problem for both users and producers. Amazon provided a mobile SDK compatible with home cooked Fire OS, Android and iOS.

Amazon’s Zocalo storage and sharing service comes as a response to Microsoft Azure and Facebook Parse. Similarly to Google Drive, Zocalo offers the possibilities to store and share various files and collect centralized feed-back from any capable device. The enterprise market for storage is still in its infancy and Amazon tries to capture as much as possible from the start by adapting Amazon Web Services. Forbes warnes us that Zocalo does not have the efficient file de-duplication feature present on Dropbox, which means that Zocalo has a long way ahead in terms of refinement.
