Amazon intends to maintain and develop Amazon Web Services. Cloud storage is a core component of the service, as we were reporting recently. The main advantage offered by cloud storage is mobility and interoperability. The same files are accessible from the desktop, laptop, smartphone, tablet, and maybe soon from smartwatches too. For now, because each device might run a different OS, there is a need for applications adapted to each of them. Amazon is obviously fully aware of the fact that it needs a platform dedicated to mobile app development decided to launch a dedicated SDK. Amazon’s new platform offers regular services like analytical software, notifications and data and file storage.
Amazon Web Services 2014 Summit which took place in New York was focused on providing a better experience for mobile users.
Amazon Web Services Zocalo file sharing
“Building mobile first apps means that you have to have a solid idea of the customer, you have to build engaging apps, and you have to measure relentlessly if you want to build better apps for your customers,” Vogel said. “But measuring on a mobile device is not easy.”, he continued, according to zdnet.com
Because users already have multiple profiles on social networks and other services, Amazon decided to introduce a synchronization feature called Cognito. Developers will have the possibility to allow logging to services by synchronizing accounts such as Facebook or Google.
Amazon Mobile Analytics will dramatically ease the access to the most important stats. A report on mobile app usage can be obtained in one hour. User retention stat is among the initial features offered by through the service, but developers will enrich the platform with new ideas further on.
Fragmentation is today’s problem for both users and producers. Amazon provided a mobile SDK compatible with home cooked Fire OS, Android and iOS.
Amazon’s Zocalo storage and sharing service comes as a response to Microsoft Azure and Facebook Parse. Similarly to Google Drive, Zocalo offers the possibilities to store and share various files and collect centralized feed-back from any capable device. The enterprise market for storage is still in its infancy and Amazon tries to capture as much as possible from the start by adapting Amazon Web Services. Forbes warnes us that Zocalo does not have the efficient file de-duplication feature present on Dropbox, which means that Zocalo has a long way ahead in terms of refinement.
