It is not long since we have talked about tech devices that took a plunge into the beauty and cosmetic industry, revolutionizing it forever. We are talking about Mink, of course, the make-up 3D printer which was very much appraised upon its showcasing during the TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2014 event in May.
Today we will talk about another example of “technology meets beauty”, this time everything being about an augmented reality makeup app called the Makeup Genius app.
It was developed and released by world leading beauty brand L’Oreal and it already is considered a hit by tech journalists, expert testers and customers alike.
The Makeup Genius app is free in the Apple Appstore, as it is available only for iPhones and iPads for the moment. Let’s see how this works:
the free “magic mirror” for iPhone and iPad that lets you see how you would appear in different eye shadows, blushes, and other beautifiers without actually applying the products. The app takes a sophisticated scan of your face with the device’s front-facing camera, digitally paints on your selected product, and then reflects all your movements, accurately portraying what you would look like in different cosmetics, from different angles, in real time.
But it’s more to the Makeup Genius app than meets the eye. It allows you to test some products in order to see how you’d look and also offers you the chance to go to the “Looks” section.
You will find there cosmetic combinations or different looks worn by celebrities such as Eva Longoria and others. So if you are interested in a, say, Jennifer Lawrence smokey – eyes, natural lipstick look, the app allows you to try, test and combine different styles until you find what you are looking for.
The tech lab belonging to L’Oreal has still some work to do to improve the app. So far it is for iOS only, but a version for Android was promised for 2015. So far, the app doesn’t allow you to purchase online the favorite products you tried on and, to be clear, you can only test a limited series of L’Oreal products from selected brands. We are sure the catalog will get richer in options pretty soon, but if you want to buy make-up from other brands, you will probably have to go to the store or use other online retailers.
However, the Makeup Genius app is a total hit:
This app works incredibly well!!! I was REALLY excited to try it out at the L’oreal studio, picked up a few bold makeup looks that I wouldn’t have tried on my own. Over all I’d give this app 10 stars if I could, that’s just how wonderful it works.
This is only one happy customer review and there are plenty where this came from. Stay tuned, ladies, as it seems that beauty and tech go hand in hand nowadays and more interesting concepts will emerge soon!
