Although not yet officially released, Cortana is the cool new feature found on Windows 8.1 Phone from Microsoft and has appeared in a brief video on Youtube. The new feature Cortana is meant to be a speaking personal digital assistant and a rival to Google’s Now and the Siri from Apple. The name Cortana is actually a code name inspired by the Halo series that can adapt and learn and relies on the learning technology and Satori knowledge repository powered by Bing.
Microsoft Cortana will be featured on Windows Phone 8.1
The new Cortana feature is actually an opt-in and will not be required for Windows Phone 8.1. from what we see on the video with the new feature it appears that users will need to sign in with a Microsoft account in order to enable the service. Once you’re signed in, you press the Bing button and this will automatically bring up the phone’s default search engine which is Cortana. Then it will ask you what name or nick name you prefer and your favorite activities. Then, the users will be prompted with tasks and sample questions for the new feature. For example, you can ask Cortana to wake you up at a certain hour.
Microsoft Cortana apparently will store personal information given by the users in its inside “notebook”. Other actions that Cortana might perform and have leaked on different websites are things like traffic, weather, places, stocks, etc.
It seems like the Cortana is meant to be the core services of future Windows OS, Windows Phone and the Xbox One operating system. The release date of Microsoft Cortana is set around the end of March or the beginning of April and it’s not known very clear when Microsoft will add it to other Windows platforms.
The Microsoft executives have been talking about a personal assistant tech since 2011 and it seems that the Microsoft Cortana is the beginning of an entire new tech journey.
