Oppo N1 Phablet Review – The First Swivel Camera on a Smartphone

March 14, 2014 By Nicholas Anderton Leave a Comment

Oppo N1 Phablet If you haven’t heard of Oppo, don’t worry too much about it, they’re new on the smartphone market and we’re here to tell you about their new product, the Oppo N1 phablet. It’s a phablet and it’s so good that we’re thinking it’s going to a bold competitor for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. To give you an idea of how awesome this phablet really is, we’ve got a little Oppo N1 review that you should take a look at.

Oppo N1 Phablet Review

This smartphone is absolutely huge. It’s a phablet-sized and you can barely hold it in your hands, but you get that with all the phablets. The Oppo N1 phablet is 5.9 inches and with that size you also get a bit of weight. Let’s just say that you’re never going to only use one hand with the Oppo N1, but if you’re OK with that, then you should be fine. The Oppo N1 phablet has a solid build – the matte white plastic and a bit of chrome-style finish makes it look a bit like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

The thing that makes the Oppo N1 phablet special is its swivel camera. It’s the perfect selfie phone! The rotating camera mount allows you to rotate the camera through 180 degrees, thus getting the fast and impressive 13MP sensor to capture your pretty mug. It’s the best quality ever for a front-facing camera. It takes beautifully crisp and balanced photos and the HDR feature works perfectly.

The Oppo N1 phablet is as impressive on the inside as it is on the outside. Aside from the full HD 1080p display, it has a Snapdragon 600 series processor and 3GB of RAM.

One of the coolest features of the Oppo N1 phablet is the fact that it comes with a lovely flip case, which functions as an automatic activator and deactivator of the phone’s display.

Smartphone Newcomer Oppo N1 Review

March 13, 2014 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

Oppo N1 Review If you’re a big phablet lover, then we bet you’re going to be very excited about the Oppo N1! Never heard of Oppo? That’s alright, the company is a newcomer on the smartphone market and it has already won the hearts of Android lovers everywhere. We’re going to take a look at the Oppo N1 review and see if this phone is actually worth paying attention to. Our guess is that it is.

Oppo N1 Review

The Oppo N1 is an enormous phone, with a 5.9-inch display. We’re not going to fool you, it’s not easy to hold in your hand and it’s quite heavy. It’s got a Full HD 1080 display and a powerful quad-core processor: the 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 (it’s not the 800 model, the one HTC One has or the LG G2). It also has 2GB of RAM, which makes it pretty fast and responsive.

The operating system is Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and to be frank, it’s a fair competitor for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the famous Oscar selfie phone. It’s got the price of $615 dollars, which makes it pricey, but still in the flagship phones area.

The most awesome features of this phone are its swiveling camera, and the touchpad around the back.

The camera has a fast and 13MP sensor and you can rotate it 180 degrees – it functions as both a front and back facing camera which means that it’s the only phone in the world with a 13MP front-facing camera.

Another pretty awesome thing that nobody else is doing but Oppo is that they are including a wonderful flip case in the box, which functions as a display activator and deactivator when you close and open it (much as the iPad’s smart case). The folks at Oppo are including it for free with the phone, which we must say it’s pretty great!

Do you like the Oppo N1 review? Are you interested in buying one? Tell us your thoughts below.

Oppo Find 7, Best Display Ever

March 4, 2014 By David Leave a Comment

oppo find 7 smartphone

Meet Oppo Find 7, from Oppo, the first smartphone (or phablet, if you will) in the world that offers a 5.5 inch screen with incredible specifications: 2560 x 1440 pixels and a pixel density of 538 ppi per inch. Wow!

Along with Oppo Find 7, the manufacturing company is bringing out there a new display technology, a Super Screen 2.0 that makes possible the high density of pixels per inch. The display is protected by the Gorilla Glass 3 technology and can even be used when the user’s hands are wet.

Let’s have a look inside the Oppo Find 7

In terms of hardware, things are looking good: Oppo Find7 has the latest and most powerful chipset produced by Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AC with four 2.5 GHz cores and Adreno 330 GPU. The processor is the same used by the Samsung Galaxy S5.

The package is completed by 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. The battery is 3000 mAh. Not to mention the very attractive design, a profile of 9.2 mm and a weight of 173 grams.

Get ready to take some great pictures with the Sony IMX214 CMOS sensor and the 13MP with LED flash and f/2.0 and record videos at 720p 4K and in slow motion (120fps). Another novelty is related to Super Zoom function: it can photograph 10 frames and can combine them into a single 50sqm image. The front camera is 5MP.

And now the price: Oppo Find 7 costs $ 565 and you can order it online in June 2014. In the meantime, Oppo invites you to meet the cheaper version of this phablet, which costs $ 480  and comes with FullHD 5.5 inch display, Snapdragon chipset version MSM8974AB 801 (quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait), 2 GB RAM and 16GB internal memory. Both versions of the Oppo Find 7 are LTE.

The Super Screen 2.0 is not the only innovation from Oppo, as the company also comes with the VOOC technology that allows a 75% battery charge in 30 minutes. Pretty awesome.

Oppo N1 CyanogenMod edition launching December 24

December 20, 2013 By David Leave a Comment

oppo-n1CyanogenMod has relied on their vast developer audience and Android ROM users to keep business going, but as the startup grows so does the need for easier access to CyanogenMod, instead of installing it on a smartphone through a complex system, the team needs to pre-install the software onto smartphones.

The Oppo N1 is the first smartphone to do this, adding CyanogenMod as a limited edition choice. The vanilla model will run Color OS, Oppo’s home brand skin for Android – but a new version has just passed the Android Compatibility Test Suite and will launch on December 24.

This is the first time CyanogenMod has passed Google’s tests, which are designed to ensure security on the device and compatibility with Android apps. Google does not accept a lot of ROM requests, simply due to changes in the structure of Android that may make apps uncotpatible with the Play store.

Oppo announced the news on Twitter and CyanogenMod gave all their mailing list a message. CyanogenMod’s community lead Abhisek Devkota described this as “a major milestone for everyone in this project,” and said Google did not ask for any changes to features or functionality.

The CyanogenMod special edition will come with cases and stickers, but on the external and internal side the Oppo N1 will not be changed. The only difference will be the change on the software, with Color OS stepping down for CyanogenMod.

We are not sure how much the CyanogenMod edition will be on launch date – our feeling is Oppo N1 will cost the same amount with or without the special ROM installed. The original Oppo N1 currently costs $599 in the US and €449 in Europe.

This will be a limited edition smartphone and CyanogenMod will be looking for more deals like this – we are not sure if they will be able to grab any large manufacturers in the next few months, but Oppo is a good start.

Oppo Find 7 will be fitted with 2K display

December 17, 2013 By Nicholas Anderton Leave a Comment

oppo-find-7Oppo has never been one to cower behind the announcement date and their PR department seems to do an excellent job at balancing teasing and not revealing a whole lot about the device before the official release.

So far we know the Find 7 is coming and now Oppo has teased the smartphone will arrive with a whopping 2K display, acing the current 1080p trend and doubling the amount of resolution to 2560 x 1600.

The 2K display movement has started already and both Sony and Samsung are developing higher-resolution screens for early 2014. We may see the 2K screens at CES 2014 in January, before the launch of smartphones to accompany the screens at MWC in Barcelona the month after.

Apart from the display specs, the Oppo Find 7 looks to take all the best on the market right now and implement it onto the smartphone. The full spec sheet has not been leaked or released yet, but we can hazard a guess through some rumors and possibilities what will come on the Find 7.

We can expect either the Snapdragon 805 SoC or the octa-core MediaTek processor, 3GB of RAM and Oppo will either add a 13MP or 16MP low-light camera, a huge battery, LTE, NFC, dual-band WiFi a/g/b/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0.

On the software side, we are curious to see if the CyanogenMod sticks to Oppo’s line of smartphones or if the Find 7 will only run Oppo’s Color OS. Choice is always better and when Color OS isn’t exactly one of our favorite skins CyanogenMod is a great option.

We would love to see this at MWC 2014, but the fact that Oppo is still a fairly unknown brand outside China will make it hard to market, especially against industry titans like Samsung and LG.

Oppo Find 7 officially teased and coming soon

December 12, 2013 By Nicholas Anderton 1 Comment

oppo-find-7Oppo loves to keep a crowd happy, regularly announcing and teasing their latest smartphones months before launch and keeping users on the edge of their seats. It looks like the Find 7 will be the next flagship from Oppo, with an official statement saying it is coming soon.

In the past month news on the Find 7 has grown and last week we got our first big specifications list leaked, showing a Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 display. Other reports say the Find 7 will have LTE, 32GB of internal storage and a huge battery to keep the smartphone powered for more than day.

We are still waiting to see a real photo of the Oppo Find 7, unfortunately it looks like Oppo is keeping its cards close to its chest, not sending the phone to anyone who is likely to leak it out. There is another smartphone Oppo is currently working on, the Oppo R1, said to revolutionise taking photos in the dark.

The Find 7 is likely to have a design similar to the Find 5 with a touch of the Oppo N1. We are not sure about the camera, Oppo may not opt for the same rotating camera on the Oppo N1, it seems like a little bit of an odd choice and a rather expensive one for the Chinese manufacturer.

It is pretty exciting adding the Find 7 to the pack of smartphones coming sometime in early 2014. The Galaxy S5, HTC One (two?), Sony Xperia Z2 and LG G3  are all expected to be released around that time slot, with higher-resolution displays and new Qualcomm processors to run even faster, alongside 3GB of RAM.

This looks to be the next gradual update on the Android line and it may be the first time Oppo experiences worldwide growth, after a few years working solely in China with little influence on the West.

Oppo Find 7 leaked with Snapdragon 805 processor and 2560 x 1440 display

December 6, 2013 By Nicholas Anderton Leave a Comment

oppo-find-7Oppo might not be one to hide all the information about their upcoming products, already declaring they are making the Find 7 and it will be the successor of the Find 5, to be released sometime next year.

Oppo has been silent since the first announcement, leaving very little idea on what smartphone we can expect on the inside and out. A new leaked document may have some information, including the new Snapdragon 805 processor and a 2560 x 1440 display on Oppo’s next flagship.

This would peg the Oppo Find 7 with other high-end devices coming in 2014, including Samsung’s Galaxy S5, LG G3 and the Sony Xperia Z2. All of these smartphones are said to be coming sometime between February and May and Oppo may follow suit.

Other features on the Oppo Find 7 include 3GB of RAM and a 13MP rear camera, Oppo will also be adding LTE to the device and on the software side it should come running Android KitKat 4.4, with Color OS on top and the possible option of CyanogenMod.

The Oppo R1 has been leaked recently, showing a new camera design to take advantage of low light images. This could be a high-end smartphone, like the Oppo N1, but not the big flagship Oppo is going to keep annual.

As for price and availability, Oppo will probably try to get this out to all countries possible. The Find 5 stayed in China for way too long and when it came to the US and Europe, it was already over six months old.

The Oppo N1 has moved past this China-only model and will ship out to Europe and the US in December, a few months after exclusivity in China. We may see the Oppo Find 7 unveiled at a European conference show and then released worldwide straight away.

Price will be competitive against other flagships and may be a little cheaper, the Oppo Find 5 was significantly cheaper than the Galaxy S4.

Oppo R1 teased as the “reinvention of night shots”

December 3, 2013 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

oppo-r1Oppo is still trying to grab media attention internationally as it prepares to launch the Oppo N1 with CyanogenMod and a new teaser is showing the next generation smartphone, the Oppo R1, apparently made for night shots and fitted with the best design and care.

The Oppo R1 is still unknown even though a few Sina Weibo accounts in China are leaking documents on the new smartphone. Oppo has said it will “reinvent night shots” meaning they are going to add a new imaging chip and some impressive focus and flash to get the best in the dark.

Cameras have always had a rough time in the dark, but smartphones like the HTC One and the iPhone 5S have clocked an impressive low-light solution. The Oppo R1 hopes to replicate this success and may feature OIS (optical image stabilisation) to make sure there is no blur or noise on the photo.

On the design side, the Oppo R1 will be fitted with an all glass design, something we have not had the best of times with on the iPhone and many Sony products. Glass has become more resilient to breaking in the years since the iPhone 4, but we still would prefer solid aluminium over it.

The phone still looks incredibly impressive on the teaser shot, coming in white or black. The camera is placed in a normal position without the odd 180 turn functionality on the Oppo N1 and the screen looks almost edge-to-edge, along with three capacitive keys.

Oppo will be announcing this device sometime this month, the same month they ship the Oppo N1 out to the US and Europe. The Oppo R1 will probably come in as another flagship in the line, like the Find 7 when it finally arrives sometime next year.

We have no details on pricing just yet or what software it will be running, we doubt this will be a partnership with CyanogenMod.

Oppo N1 will be available in the US on December 10 for $599

December 2, 2013 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

oppo-n1The Oppo N1 has only been available in China for the past few months, even with CyanogenMod’s contribution pointing to a US and European release. Oppo has finally revealed dates for the two regions and the Oppo N1 will be available on December 10.

For those that do not remember, the Oppo N1 is the newest flagship from the rather unknown smartphone manufacturer Oppo. The previous flagship, the Find 5, was one of the first to come with a 1080p display and its only major issue was the software on the smartphone.

Notable features on the Oppo N1 include the 13MP rotating camera, allowing the user to take front and rear shots, 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a 5.9-inch 1080p display. On the software side, Oppo offers the choice of their own Color OS and CyanogenMod.

In first looks, the Oppo N1 is one of the best Android devices but it definitely has a lot of niche features that do not appeal to regular users. The rotating Oppo N1 camera looks exciting but also a little weird in normal use and can be hard to configure correctly.

The two operating systems skins are also a little odd, Color OS is still a bit odd in parts with Oppo not really grasping design and functionality on Android. CyanogenMod is a great mod for those that love Android, but may be a little out there for those that are used to TouchWiz and Sense.

Oppo N1 will arrive in the US for $599 off contract and we do not believe there will be any carriers supporting the launch. In Europe, the Oppo N1 will be available for €449 off contract, but we have no idea if Oppo will bring this to the UK, with no pound price.

Oppo N1 going international on December with CyanogenMod

November 8, 2013 By David Leave a Comment

oppo-n1Oppo is still a small brand name in the US and Europe, but this may change in a few months, as the company plans to launch their new flagship device, the Oppo N1, running CyanogenMod without any ROM changes.

The company will sell the Oppo N1 in a limited and standard edition, one running Oppo’s new Color OS and the other running popular ROM CyanogenMod. We believe Oppo will target the CyanogenMod edition in the US, where the ROM is most popular.

Oppo has added some pretty neat features onto the Oppo N1, including the 13MP rotating rear camera and back touch panel. Inside the device is the Snapdragon 600 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16/32GB of internal storage and a huge 3610mAh battery.

We have not heard details on the reception for the new device in China, Oppo has some tough competition in their home-region, with Xiaomi and Meizu both bringing out top notch flagship devices at cheap prices.

Oppo is the first one to really bring expansion to the US and Europe with carrier involvement. We do not know how many carrier will jump on the opportunity to have an unknown brand on their service, but many Android fans know who Oppo are and love the Oppo Find 5.

This is a big move by Oppo and one that may backfire, Huawei, Lenovo and other huge brands have not been able to penetrate the European or US market with their mobile devices, with most still opting for Samsung or Apple as their device manufacturer.

In the dense Android universe, we wonder if the Oppo N1, which is already a little outdated in terms of raw specs, is up to the scratch. It does have a 5.9-inch 1080p display for big phablet fans and the weird rotating camera may be exciting enough for some, but the main winning feature here is CyanogenMod out the box.
