For Google, the Internet is more than just a place where the company offers services. Internet is THE place for Google and the giant corporation’s wellbeing depends on the Internet’s overall wellbeing. The more people get online and feel safe while performing financial operations or just socialize, the more Google has to gain. It is practically impossible to avoid using a service designed by Google, even if you are an Apple or Microsoft fan. That is why Google Project Zero just launched on Tuesday. The security issues span across all software providers. The Chinese Government just accused Apple of collecting personal data from Chinese users.
The safety of the internet users is so important for Google that the company decided to take things into its own hands. Google Project Zero is the attempt to overcome security threats over the Internet. Heartbleed, the security bug, made everyone in the business worried about how to prevent further similar annoyances.
Google Project Zero is an open project
Project Zero means a team made out of the top security researchers who will work on reducing the number of security threats like ‘zero-day’ vulnerabilities. Google argues that this type of attacks is very sophisticated and requires deep commitment. In this cases the cyber-attacks are deployed in the same day when the bug is traced, not leaving enough time for the software vendor to address the security flaw with an adequate patch.
Google’s message is grandiose. The company portrays as the Batman of the Internet trying to protect the rotting Gotham City. The city, however, does not have an adequate public security service. The nation-states have no clues so far on how to react to the Internet threats in an organized manner. Most of them act locally in an environment which is truly global in every sense. An international coalition on the matter is still awaited.
Google Project Zero will rely on transparency. Every discovered bug will be inscribed in an external database freely available to anyone. The company will address the security bugs with the software vendor, after which it will track how the problem is solved, how much time it takes and offer important analytical services related to the management of the situation.
Along with the announcement of the new project, Google announced they are hiring, so if you are passionate about security issues, you might as well apply for the job. The new team is headed by Chris Evans, the former head of Google Chrome security. Other members of the Google Project Zero team are, according to Gigaom.com, Ben Hawkes, Tavis Ormandy, and Brit Ian.
