Sony’s E – Paper FES Watch Is Hidden in Plain Sight

In the last few days, Sony was rumored to have been working on an e – paper smartwatch, but now we have proof that the rumors were indeed true. Sony’s e – paper FES Watch has been hiding in plain sight on the Japanese crowdfunding website Makukake since September this year. Nobody noticed its presence there, as Sony’s name was nowhere to be found. Instead, enthusiasts supported a project called Fashion Entertainments Watch.

The e – paper FES Watch is being developed by a company named Fashion Entertainments, which is associated with Sony. The experimental wearable device borrowed the e – paper and e – ink technologies we are familiar with from our Kindle or Pebble devices. However, Sony took them to a whole new level. The FES Watch sports the e – paper principles not only for the watch face, but also for the wristband. This allows the watch to change its entire look, as it was designed to feature 24 different designs.

From a monochrome elegant design and a light – colored one, to an alligator skin composition, the watch cycles patterns in a very attractive manner. Almost all tech journalists agree that this is basically everything the watch does in terms of “smartness”, but specialists admit that the 60 days battery life is something to take into account.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony hid the e – paper FES Watch in plain sight on purpose, as it wanted to test the public’s reaction to the device before any official release.

“We hid Sony’s name because we wanted to test the real value of the product, whether there will be demand for our concept, said a person familiar with the matters.”

We can say the public welcomed the smart gadget wholeheartedly: the crowdfunding goal was around $8,500, but the project rose a little over $20,000.

Sony seems to follow the footsteps of other major tech companies which are now entering the tech – fashion market. Analysts consider that this field does not only have an immense potential, but it will also see fierce competition in the years to come. Some enterprises focus on developing smart accessories and jewelry, while others like Sony, experiment with e – paper gadgets. Reports suggest that Fashion Entertainments is working on other e – paper prototypes involving shoes and bow – ties.

The price for this highly fashionable and interesting e – paper FES Watch is not impossible to afford: people supporting the crowdfunding project paid $167 and are expecting to receive the device around May 2015. However, we don’t know yet whether Sony will make the watch widely available as a consumers’ product.

Sony E-ink Smartwatch Allegedly in the Making

November 26, 2014 By Brandi McCants Leave a Comment

sony e-ink smartwatch

Smartwatch technology is still in its teen years, but Sony announced a project that will take smartwatch development into a completely new direction. The Japanese tech giant works on a watch with e-ink technology.

If you are used to getting information only from the round or squarish watch display, get ready to read additional info directly on the device’s wrist band. Sony will use a patented material to cover both key areas. The company has not officially announced the idea, so the news comes from anonymous sources, Bloomberg stated.

We should not expect any technological breakthroughs, however. Sony has style in mind rather than performance. Watches have long been fashionable devices, so it makes sense to produce smartwatches that have style as a key selling point. An e-ink display may heavily increase battery life, a core issue in current smartwatches.

At the moment, users are not particularly excited about the new type of products, although the trend is predicted to change in the next couple of years. Especially so if smartphones keep getting bigger (when will the madness stop?) Users consider that most current smartwatches are heavy and pricy, according to a survey.

Sony’s smartphone division has been performing poorly in strict financial terms. Next year, the company will consequently reduce its smartphone lineup. The latest Xperia Z3 and its smaller version, Xperia Z3 Compact have been widely acclaimed by analysts and consumers, particularly for their stellar battery performance. Hiroki Totoki, the new mobile division chief, specifically said they are looking for ways to increase profit, not market share.

As you may already know, the future e-ink smartwatch will not be the company’s first smartwatch. Sony SmartWatch is already at the fifth generation, a stage when the company decided to embrace Android Wear as wearable OS instead of its own software.

For Sony, the e-ink smartwatch is part of a larger development strategy. Allegedly, the company started running out of ideas for new products, so they came up with a solution.

In an effort to revive its culture of innovation, Sony founded a new department called MESH (Make, Experience, Share) earlier this year. MESH fosters DIY projects by basically offering various hardware building block which are easily programmable to amateur tech enthusiasts.

The Sony e-ink smartwatch idea comes from a MESH subdivision called Seed Acceleration Program. Employees can pitch ideas inside or outside the company with the goal of receiving funding. Thus, the future e-ink device success will be the first Seed Acceleration Program success.

Sony SmartWatch 2 Release Date Delayed to September 9

July 19, 2013 By Mary Duncan 1 Comment

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra and the SmartWatch 2 makes a picture of contrast. This since the former makes for a considerable presence given its generous dimensions which makes the SmartWatch 2 seem puny in front of it. Nevertheless, the two devices made a stage appearance on June 25th and both evoked considerable consumer interest. However, it is the SmartWatch 2 that is the topic of discussion here, and unfortunately, it’s not good news that we are out to share about the successor of the original SmartWatch device.

Clove UK had started accepting pre orders for the Sony SmartWatch 2 with the launch date mentioned being July 15. However, that is not to be according to the latest input on this. Instead, the launch has now been postponed to September 9.

So those who have already pre ordered the SmartWatch 2 have to wait for two long months to get the device. But the UK based retailer cannot be blamed for it whatsoever. According to it, the delay is actually the result of some sort of a goof up and it is Sony that seems to be at fault. The retailer further said that it might even happen that someone has purposely messed up with the launching date and mentioned it to be much earlier that what it actually is. This is however not the very first time that Sony has deviated from its original statement. Even the customers who have pre ordered Xperia Z tablet had also suffered a similar fate. The tablet was first scheduled for a mid April release after which Sony apologized and even stated that the device will be coming in May.
