Its best feature was the wave – it gave owners the opportunity to stop the smoke alarm with only one hand-wave gesture.
Unfortunately, other hand gestures could stop the alarm going off just as well, increasing the danger of the device not working properly (as in signaling a true fire breaking down).
Taking notice of the defect, Nest pulled back its troops and stopped selling the Nest smart smoking detector while trying to patch things up in the same time.
The defect prompted Nest to halt sales of the detector in early April. The company also delivered software updates over the Internet to deactivate the wave feature on the devices that had already been sold and installed. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that about 440,000 units of the Nest Protect had been sold by the time of the recall.
However, Nest Labs did their homework and they did it well. In case you didnn’t know, tech titan Google bought Nest earlier this year (in January) and it issued a software patch to fix the hand – gestures problem. The customers who were already using the Nest smart smoking detector didn’t need to do anything about it, just have the patches implemented. Now Google is taking another shot with the Nest, currently called Nest Protect, by releasing it again at a lower price:
We’re very pleased that Nest Protect is once again available to customers. And now, the price is $99 to make it accessible to as many people as possible.
One great thing about the Nest smart smoke detector is that it is also a carbon monoxide detector and it alerts people when the level of the carbon monoxide in a house goes beyond the safety threshold. There is a full story told on the Nest Protect official page about the detector’s capabilities of saving lives in real time and we have to admit, it is a very convincing one.
According to specialists in the matter, who sneak – peeked into the company’s details and marketing strategies,
In addition to Nest Protect, the company also markets Nest Thermostat, an energy-saving appliance that learns your temperature preferences and which you can control with your smartphone. Both products are available from Nest’s online store or from Google Play.
Now that you have this device working better and keeping you safe at a lower price, there is no reason why you shouldn’t give it a try. Now with Google running the show and aiming to deliver smarter and smarter devices for our homes, the Nest smart smoke detector seems to look like a good investment.
