After a short construction work pause, protest reemerge on Mouna Kea regarding the Thirty Meter Telescope. The new Telescope battling for construction atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii has had its construction halted several times already.
Mauna Kea has been the site of numerous astronomical observations thanks to its position telescope site and mountain high elevated position.
As work resumes today on the construction of the new Telescope, protesters are demonstrating against its development arguing that it is trampling on the sacred land of Native Hawaiians.
The thirty Meter Telescope is a massive 18 story project. The astronomical observatory and large telescope are aimed at gathering astronomical data of higher quality than any other such devices on the Earth’s surface.
About 20 people are protesting the scientific structure, on top of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea. The protesters stated they will do anything “peacefully” possible to stop the construction.
Some have said they expect to be arrested soon by police forces for trying to halt construction. Some have stated they already have bail money ready.
Several persons have stated that the mountains which hold 13 telescopes already, should not be the site of any new developments.
The protesters are camped on the trail that leads to the construction site, with some sleeping in their cars.
The protesters have to also face tough conditions as the weather is quite chilly for Hawaii’s average. It is notable that the protest is mostly held at an elevation of 9200 feet.
Several protests have already focused international attention on the construction site.
In October 2014 the first ground level works were interrupted by demonstrators. Then in late March 2015 again halted the project construction.
In April 2015 around 300 protesters gathered again at the site and some of them tried to block road access to the construction site.
Work on the Thirty Meter Telescope has been halted in April after 31 people were arrested for blocking the access to the site. Governor Ige announced that the work on the site will be halted from 8 to the 20th of April.
Mauna Kea is the best site for the construction of autonomic observational devices , because of its positioning, high altitude and lack of air or light pollution at the site.
