In an attempt to make direct messages more important on its micro blogging platform Twitter has announced today that the character limit for writing private messages will increase from 140 characters to 10.000 characters. This will make Twitter more similar to a messaging app.
Although the company boasts with its number of active monthly users Twitter has always been a broadcast platform and this new update indicates that Twitter has considered the need for private messaging. Since previously the limit was of only 140 characters it was frustrating for those who wanted to write more and this is what usually happened.
Sachin Agarwal from Twitter has already informed developers about the change although the update will be rolled out in July. For now there is no official date for when the change will be applied.
The update will be applied only for direct messages, not for tweets, whose character limit will remain 140. Earlier this month Twitter investor Chris Sacca wrote in a blog post about the way in which the platform can improve. When mentioning the 140 words character limit he did not say that he had any problem with it. On the contrary, he described the limit as being beautiful, claiming that it had brought a new manner of writing on Twitter.
This change means that Twitter will become a legitimate messaging app. Before users could only exchange quick comments, links and afterwards moved to other apps in order to talk such as Facebook’s Messenger or WhatsApp.
With the new 10.000 character limit users are free to talk however much they want to. 10.000 characters mean that you can even write a short novel in a direct message. For example the short story ”The Little Match Girl” is much shorter than the new limit.
Other social networks like LinkedIn and Facebook do not have a character limit when it comes to direct messages. However Twitter had this limit ever since the company’s earliest days when you could send tweets in text messages. But things have evolved, communication has become very important and Twitter has to satisfy the needs of the users. By extending the character limit the company can keep its great number of users who will no longer feel the need to use other apps for chatting. This update will be very beneficial particularly for companies which run customer services on Twitter.
If you do not want to receive direct messages from people who do not follow you all you have to do is access the Security and privacy section in Settings and uncheck “Receive Direct Messages”.
