Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of World Wide Web, has a plan to annihilate fake news and data abuse. He developed a five-year strategy to combat fake news. Berners-Lee marked the 28th anniversary of www with a letter in which he announced his plan for tackling the abuse of data, being concerned about how the web is being used.
Sir Tim Berners-Lee argued that he is bound to start a fight against the misuse of personal data which is trying to annihilate the free speech. He also requested for severe regulations regarding the political adverts. Berners-Lee argued that he asks the ones who helped to enrich the web with web pages, videos, photos, tweets and blogs to think about some practical methods to transform the network into a source of equal opportunity and power for everybody.
Internet users are sometimes unable to distinguish what data is not of their interest, announcing outlets. The policy which implies terms and conditions represent “all or nothing,” as Sir Tim puts it. He is prone to work with companies to offer users a fair level of information control. The scientist is also concerned about the fact that the surveillance of the government is crossing the line due.
This also determined people from using the web to explore particular topics like religion, sexuality and sensitive health problems. Sir Tim believes that search engines and social media sites should be encouraged to boost their efforts to fight against fake news and abuse of personal information. Nevertheless, he argued that users should avoid central bodies which decide what is true or false.
Particular algorithms may favor sensationalist data which was specially created to shock users rather than ask themselves whether the information provided by the media is false or truth. Unfortunately, the boost of social media and the expansion of internet use has developed same patterns for presenting fictional and real stories. How are people supposed to tell one apart from the other?
Fake news represents false data which were deliberately transmitted by those who do not actually care about the truth of a statement but hope to promote a particular political cause and make money out of it. Nevertheless, the fake news could also be false information which is spread around by journalists and reporters who do not realize that it is false news. The Commons Culture, Media, and Sports Committee are currently investigating concerns about people being tricked by lies and propaganda.
