Madmind Studio finally finished all the touches on the crowdfunded game Agony, but had to make some changes it wasn’t ready for. The game offers a serious dose of gore, violence, and nudity. Given the age rating it received, the devs had to censor most of these elements. However, horror game fans cannot give up on gore, so they designed a special patch that disables censorship and brings back the R-rated content.
Agony needed some editing before the release on consoles
It’s well-known that fans of horror games are particularly fond of gore and other violent elements. If they are not present, the game seems to lack that passion that made it intense. Madmind Studio knows this very well, so the censorship Agony had to undergo wasn’t really welcome.
Fortunately, the studio found a solution. This weekend, it published an update on Kickstarter that addressed the censorship issue. There, Madmind Studio clarified the situation, and said the age rating forced it to censor some elements that seemed too sensitive.
“In order to be able to publish the game, we had to make some compromises. Otherwise, we would have had to delete the whole project and never release it,” declared the studio in the update.
The new patch will deliver the full horror experience in Agony
However, they knew how important gore is for horror games, and didn’t want Agony to become completely different because of censorship. The solution was to release a patch for PC only that brought the original game without any changes.
Madmind Studio wanted to get Agony rated as M (Mature), so it could be released on PS4 and Xbox. Initially, it was rated as A-O (Adult-Only), which only made it suitable for PC. Therefore, it had to edit the scenes a bit, and cut whatever was too violent or extreme. This patch will bring back the whole horror experience Agony can deliver.
Unfortunately, this patch will be available only on PC. The studio wanted to bring the original Agony on consoles as well, but legal issues prevented it from doing it. After this announcement, the studio will come with a new release date as well, that will include the non-censorship patch.
