Rumor has it that Amazon intends to launch a new Alexa device which will be a better version of current Alexa, allowing people to perform voice calls. The report released on March 3rd indicates that the new and improved device will feature the voice-assistant technology of the company, known as Alexa. The new Alexa will be equipped with a new function that will allow people to speak with another Alexa owner through the device.
This can be considered a sort of new intercom. When it was first released, Alexa appeared integrated into Amazon’s Echo, and the price was estimated at $180. The speaker device and wireless streaming were able to control a broad range of other internet-connected gadgets and services by speaking to Alexa. This device started being available to subscribers of Amazon Prime towards the end of 2014.
Since then, the hardware of Echo remained unaltered. Nevertheless, in March 2016, Echo launched a new version of Echo namely Echo Dot. This one did not feature a built-in speaker. Alexa was also implemented to the Fire tablets of Amazon, Fire TV streaming gadgets and in the Amazon Tap, a Bluetooth speaker. Nevertheless, Amazon did not make available a release price for the Echo.
However, the company has revealed that people already purchased five million such items. Considering the fact that speakers’ interactions with Echo consist in talking to a voice which is streamed over the internet, it is not clear what the new feature will offer customers. One of the answers lies in seeing and talking with other people outside the house.
The new device will also offer you the possibility of making regular phone calls using Alexa. Other reports argued that Amazon intends to develop an enhanced version of the Echo device which will feature a screen. The screen may help users perform hands-free video calls. Recently, Amazon has invested in a startup known as Nucleus which is bound to develop video intercoms which can be connected to Alexa.
What is more, Schlage appears to collaborate with Amazon, providing users voice activation accessibility to Schlage Connect Touchscreen Deadbolt through Alexa device. Thus, Alexa owners may use this technology to lock the door or check whether it is locked via Samsung SmartThings hub while being in the kitchen, bedroom or living room.
