Are Phablets a threat to smartphones and tablets?

There may be a niche group of consumers for the phablets, but as for now they
are little threat to smartphones or tablets. Mobile devices carrying a screen size
between tablets and smartphones may offer a more immersive user experience
right from their palm, but the tablets and smartphones have little to fear from
them.

Although there is a growing trend among vendors to develop phablets, which is
a mobile device with screen size more than 5 inches, the phablet is not going to
overtake tablets and smartphones. However, the device may just continue to exist
and serve a specific segment of customers.

The Consumer Electronics Show that took place in Las Vegas last week saw the
launch of phablets by many vendors. Some examples are ZTE’s 5-inch Grand
S, Ascend Mate device, 5-inch screen Optimus Vu and 5-inch display Xperia Z.
These units tend to use voice as the main mode of communication.

Whether phablet will be a threat to other devices or not, it would not be wise
step by ailing vendors to jump in this space. Although many vendors are seen to
jump into the phablet market, the competition will be tough as the phablet market
is already led by Samsung, that is able to create high resolution and low power
displays very efficiently.

What differentiates the phablets from other devices is the screen size and
display. Therefore those companies that have extensive and more experience in
manufacturing display capabilities will be more successful in producing phablets.

Phablets help people communicate via sending messages through messaging app
or through video conferencing call. The users can also surf the Internet, watch
videos and engage better with the technology. A bigger screen always offers a
more immersive experience and relaxation to the eyes. But the market size is not
big enough to make place for most vendors.
