An Exclusive Treat Awaits Those who Use Spotify Without Paying

By Leave a Comment

Smartphone with headphones and the Spotify logo on the screen

Spotify is planning some major changes on its mobile app

There are about 80 million people who use Spotify without paying, so the company decided they deserve a treat too. At the beginning of this month, the music streaming service decided to go public. Now, it comes with another set of big news for its free branch, which will definitely make a lot of people happy.

Surprise for those who use Spotify without paying

Not everyone is willing to pay for music streaming. As a result, many people use Spotify without paying since the company decided to make the platform public. If this wasn’t enough, it has now decided to make life easier for all these users. To make the big announcement, Spotify officials will organize a special event.

Therefore, it’s still not clear what these changes actually are about. What we know for sure is that the mobile app will suffer some beneficial changes. In other words, they are directed towards those users who reap the benefits of Spotify without paying.

Fortunately, we might offer some hints on what the app will now contain. It’s well-known that Spotify was testing some features on the iOS app. We are talking about voice control, which should allow users to manage their playlists a lot easier. However, this is only a rumor, so the actual changes remain a surprise.

Spotify needs to improve its strategy against competitors

Offering treats to those who use Spotify without paying is actually quite a clever strategy. At the moment, there is a gap of several millions of users between Spotify and the next service in the top, Apple Music. However, competition still exists.

For instance, Apple Music appears to be growing at a 5 percent rate right now. As a comparison, Spotify’s rate has dropped to 2 percent. This made a quick move by the Swedish company absolutely necessary. Meanwhile, Spotify still owns the supremacy on the music streaming market, and it might be hard to beat that.

PUBG Ransomware Asks You to Play a Shooter Game to Decrypt Your Files

By Leave a Comment

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds wallpaper with a soldier and an explosion

The PUBG Ransomware allows you to unlock your files in a funny way

Many people became victims of one of the most unusual ransomwares. Instead of having to pay money to regain control of their files, victims have to play a game of one of the most popular battle royale shooters. The multiplayer game in question is no other than PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and the virus is suggestively called PUBG Ransomware.

An unusual type of ransomware

Encrypting files and asking for money in exchange of them is a thing of the past. Now, hackers get more creative when it comes to devising files that corrupt our computers. At first, PUBG Ransomware looks just like any other ransomware. If you open it on your computer, it will start encrypting files.

It will move all the encrypted files on a folder on the desktop that will have the extension .PUBG. Of course, you won’t be able to access them anymore. Usually, ransomware victims had to pay some money or make a different payment if they wanted their files back.

PUBG Ransomware offers you a fun way to decrypt your files

Here is where PUBG Ransomware is different. Instead of asking for payments, hackers ask the victims to play a game of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The message tells victims they have to spend at least an hour playing the game. However, they actually need to just launch the game. When you do this, the ransomware will see it and it will decrypt your files immediately.

This might not sound like a serious cyberattack, but you shouldn’t treat it like a joke. It’s true, you can regain control of your files really easily, but it can still encrypt them. You can take it as a warning that you should be really careful with the security of your computer and your files.

If you’ve been a victim of PUBG Ransomware, take it as a warning. This ransomware was easy to decrypt, but you might not be as lucky next time. Make sure you secure your files, and pay attention to what you download.

Google Launches the Candidate Discovery Feature to Help with Recruiting

By Leave a Comment

Selecting one silhouette in favor of two others

The candidate discovery feature makes the search for candidates easier

During last year’s I/O meeting, Google made an exciting announcement for recruiters. The company was planning to launch Google for Jobs, an AI-powered system that allowed employers find the best candidates by sifting through all the job offers and resumes found in Search. As a result, it appeared Hire, the system that now is getting a special feature, candidate discovery.

Candidate discovery helps companies with recruiting

Hire is a special tool that employers can use to ease the recruiting process. This tool gets integrated with other Google-related systems. It can send emails to candidates automatically via Gmail, schedule talks and interviews with them via Google Calendar, and track them down via Google Sheets.

Through the candidate discovery feature, Google will take advantage of what it can do best, namely search. With the help of several other options and actions, it can direct this specialized search to find the best candidates for a company.

Candidate discovery is more than necessary. It eases the job companies need to do when they undertake recruiting and hiring. Usually, they come into contact with several hundreds of candidates when they actually seek to occupy one single open position. From those that don’t get selected, there are many who might be perfect for future jobs. When these new jobs appear, it’s quite hard for companies to select candidates they have already talked to in the past.

The filtering system will offer the best candidates for a position

With the candidate discovery feature, it will become a lot easier to sift through all these candidates and see who is the perfect one for this new job opening. The option will run some scans on the requirements of the job, its location, and any possible options. Then, it will scan the candidate list, and display those who might be suitable for the opening.

Candidate discovery is the perfect opportunity to review previous candidates. The system will allow recruiters to see how the past interviews went. This will help them select the ideal person who can occupy that open position. Those who have received a good feedback will appear higher on the generated list, as well as those who have initially rejected an offer.

Microsoft: Windows 10 Updates To Take No Longer than 30 Min

By Leave a Comment

Windows 10 Update reaches 35%Microsoft recently promised to find a way for Windows 10 Updates to not lock you out of your computer for more than 30 minutes on average. Some major Windows 10 updates took as long as 2 hours, so a change would be welcome.

Yet, security experts are not over thrilled. They are concerned that “30 minutes on average” could mean lengthier updates if we do the math.

The downtime is necessary for an update being it for Windows 10, Android, or iOS. Updates usually have two steps: the online and the offline. The online phase should not be confused with having an Internet connection.

The online phase occurs as the user is using the computer without him even knowing it. During the online phase of the process, the update is downloaded to the device and the OS verifies the new piece of software to see if there are any errors in it.

Windows 10 Updates’ Downtime Significantly Trimmed

The offline phase is the problematic one. This is when the files are moved and the update is installed. Because the process needs a lot of resources, the user is virtually locked out of his own device until finished. Some updates took more than an hour to complete.

After the update called the Windows 10 Fall Creators, the downtime was trimmed to 51 minutes. Microsoft now wants to reduce that time even more to 30 minutes after another major update.

However, Microsoft will do that by changing very few things. It will move some parts of the offline phase of the update into the online phase. So, your computer will be working on the update without booting you out; and when it does boot you out, it would be for a shorter period of time.

This could mean that Microsoft will be able to roll out even more time consuming updates, but you won’t be noticing it, unless your computer is not that fast.

Apple Watch User Awakened by 3 Cops In His Bedroom after Accidental Call

By Leave a Comment

An Apple Watch user said he mistakenly dialed 911 in his sleep and was awakened by 3 cops at 1 a.m. in his bedroom. The police officers said they received an emergency call from his device, so they wanted to know what the problem was.

The iPhone and Apple Watch have an emergency SOS feature that enables users to call for help really quick. On the latest models, including the iPhone X, a slide bar that activates the service appears after the users hold one of the volume buttons and the side button.

After using this combination of buttons, a dispatcher gets a call and emergency contacts get text messages that you may be in danger. The dispatcher and contacts get information on your current location too.

iPhone 7 or older models require the users to hit the side button five times in a rapid succession. In India, the button needs to be hit three times. On those models you’ll have to access the slider to activate the emergency call protocol, as well.

Apple Watch’s Emergency Feature Is Easily Set Off

On the Apple Watch, things are simpler, but they make police officers’ lives more complicated. It is enough to hold down the crown to dial 911. There is no need to drag a slide either. The less complex feature was rolled out with the WatchOS 4 and iOS 11.

In theory, the feature may be safer for users, but many times it was triggered by mistake in practice. For example, Jason Rowley accidentally called the cops in his sleep while wearing the Apple Watch to monitor his sleeping patterns.

Rowley accidentally set off the feature and woke up in the middle of the night with three police officers in his bedroom. The cops had entered his home, thinking that something bad must have happened. They also told Rowley that it was not the first time they were dispatched to a false emergency situation triggered by an Apple device.

Pokemon Go Player Attacks Other Player IRL for Losing Gym

By Leave a Comment

A Pokemon Go player in Washington state allegedly attacked three other Pokemon Go players with a tire iron after losing a gym. The man pulled up his car near three teens in Vancouver asking them who won the gym.

The three friends were sitting on a park bench at the time and had no idea the man had assaulted other players in the area on other occasions. The man now faces charges of malicious mischief and assault, according to local police.

Witnesses said the suspect, Stephen Jolly, asked the three kids who had just won a nearby gym in the Pokemon Go. The winner, Andrew Otton, explained that he was about to revive his pokemon when the man tried to take it out.

I took it from him and I didn’t know he just took it, and he was like, ‘Hey, did you just take this gym from me?,

the teen told police officers.

Other Players Had Been Assaulted in the Area

He added that the man looked very upset about the entire situation. One of the player’s friends said the alleged assailant punched his friend ‘several times’ which prompted him to start chocking Jolly to let his friend go.

One of the friends posted the incident on Facebook and publicized the man’s license plate. Other local Pokemon Go players said they had troubles with Jolly too. This time the assault happened on the Burnt Bridge Creek Trail. The suspect told police that he did not hit anyone but he did use the tire iron on a nearby table.

Pokemon Go was first launched in July 2016. The game was behind a series of serious accidents, like players trespassing private property, driving into real-world lakes, or engaging in car crashes after not paying attention to the road. It is the first time, a player assaults other players, though.

Apple Slams Iranian Users with IP-based App Store Ban

By Leave a Comment

The iPhone 8A new report shows that starting Thursday, the App Store has banned Iranian users based on their IP addresses. Users were no longer to access the service around noon local time Thursday.

Several cybersecurity experts confirmed that the ban is IP-based. Some users were able to fend off the ban via Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. The App Store could be accessed with a VPN even if users had an Iranian based App Store account.

Security experts tried to bypass the restrictions by creating a U.S.-based account. The service was still blocked as their IP was from Iran. As of now, all iPhone users in Iran will have to use a VPN to download their favorite apps.

Meysam Firouzi confirmed the reports that the ban is based on IP addresses. Friouzi was able to access the Store via a VPN even though his account was Iranian.

Apple has not issued an official statement about the problem.

Apple’s App Store Ban is Not a First in Iran

Nevertheless, it is not the first time the U.S. tech giant turns its back to Iran. In the past, it scrapped the applications created in Iran from the App Store. At the time, the company explained that it doesn’t want to do business with a country that is under U.S. embargo.

As long as the U.S. sanctions regulations are in effect, Apple is poised to ban apps and developers from Iran. It now seems to ban iPhone users as well. Surprisingly, Apple is still having a flourishing business in the country despite the sanctions.

Iranians buy their iPhones from China as Apple is barred from selling the handsets in Iran because of U.S. laws. The imported iPhones arrive quite fast since, last year, the iPhone 8 was available in Iran within 24 hours after its official release date (Sept. 22, 2017).

WhatsApp Extends Time Window for Message Deletion

By Leave a Comment

User installing the WhatsApp MessengerWhatsApp has silently stretched the time window for message deletion from seven minutes to around one hour. To be more exact, you will no longer be able to delete a message in WhatsApp after one hour, eight minutes, and 16 seconds.

Although the change is significant, it is unclear why the time window is so specific. The feature to delete unwanted messages was launched in October 2017 under the name ‘delete for everyone.’ It enabled users to delete the message from all devices involved in the conversation. But that could be done only within seven minutes.

WhatsApp’s website doesn’t offer an explanation about the newly introduced time limit. With the new limit, you will be able to delete any unwanted message or an entire convo from your peer’s phone.

Other similar messaging services have a feature for secret conversations which generates a conversation that won’t be stored on either device. WhatsApp lacks such feature, but after the latest change, temporary conversations could become a thing on the Facebook-owned service too.

‘Delete for Everyone’ Feature Has Been A Game Changer

Last fall, WhatsApp allowed users to delete messages after they tapped the send button but in the next seven minutes after sending them. The messages were deleted from conversations and group chats on both the sender’s and receiver’s devices.

However, both parties needed the latest version of the app to be installed on their device. The feature called ‘delete for everyone’ was rolled out gradually. Before the change, users could only delete messages and conversations stored on their devices.

At the time, WhatsApp warned that recipients could still see the unwanted message before it is deleted. Also, some users may see bits of the deleted message in their notifications tab.

Nevertheless, the feature has been quite handy especially for those alcohol-induced messages.
