Google parent Alphabet pointed out that balloons may enable better internet delivery compared to drones. Alphabet has closed its unit known as Titan. This group was responsible for exploring the utilization of autonomous aerial devices for web services’ delivery. The Google parent decided to focus on its Project Loon based on the use of balloons to enable the use of Internet to remote areas.
Back in 2014, Google produced Titan Aerospace. In late 2015, the group working on the launch of drones was brought into the X research laboratory. This lab incubates many Alphabet moonshot projects such as the Project Wing used for internet delivery based on drones. On January 11, Alphabet has declared that their work on high-altitude UAVs used for internet access was canceled after they revealed that at this stage, the Project Loon represented a more promising way to the delivery internet connection.
The Project Loon was considered to be more useful and advanced compared to high-altitude UAVs, being even better at providing Internet services to remote areas. The first who reported news about Titan project’s cancellation was 9to5Google. Alphabet pointed out that many specialists working on the Titan project were reassigned to work on new projects like Project Wing and Project Loon.
The Google parent has also invested in the development of satellites which can beam Internet signals to our planet. Back in January 2015, Google has invested in the well-known private company conducted by Elon Musk, SpaceX. The primary purpose was to design, produce and launch several spacecraft and rockets into space.
Apparently, many people were not surprised about the cancellation of Titan project. This decision seemed appropriate since, during the first flight test back in 2015, the drone failed and crashed. What is more, there were appeared issues concerning the transmission of 5GB data besides other budget problems.
Moreover, since the transformation of Google into Alphabet, the tech giant has created a financially implacable expectation. The tech company is no longer as willing as it was before the disastrous failure when they lost a lot of money on moonshot projects. Even if those projects were not feasible enough to invest in, the teams of scientists faced immense pressure to transform ambitious ideas into practical concepts.
