Capcom decided to bring Resident Evil 7 back to its roots, being a survival horror game and they managed to sell approximately three million copies. Is this a success or a failure? The predecessor of this game, Resident Evil 6 was interpreted by critics as being a total failure. Nevertheless, at that time, Capcom did not explicitly state that they would be able to restore the franchise.
Many people were wondering whether this game will ever go back to its former success. Some reviews have revealed that the company has finally been able to reestablish the franchise by releasing Resident Evil 7. However, the sales area is to be analyzed to establish whether the new game managed to surpass the performance of the previous or not.
Based on information provided by Capcom in a press release, they managed to ship about three million units of Resident Evil 7 for Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4 platforms. Overall, the company managed to sell approximately 76 million copies since 1996 when the first Resident Evil was launched. Now, considering the fact that the game was launched on January 24, it means that it managed to achieve progress in only three weeks.
Capcom described Resident Evil 7 as a game which continues to develop itself from the roots of this series, being based on exploration, fear and tense atmosphere. The new game makes the transition between the third-person point of view from the perspective of the first person, offering an overwhelming experience.
Nevertheless, we need to keep in mind that the figures indicated only represent the shipped units. The total number of copies which was bought by gamers is still unknown. Three million copies were sent to retailers. That suggests that the demand was significant for the new Resident Evil 7. This could only be a good sign that the game is on its way up to success.
But critics come again to say that we need to compare it with the previous games of the franchise. During the launch week of Resident Evil 5, the company has shipped about four million copies while for Resident Evil 6 the franchise sent 4.5 million copies to retailers. Some argued that the lower figures for the new game may be due to the disappointing response of customers to Resident Evil 6.
