Of Cars and Mustaches, the Lyft Version

Uber and Lyft, two companies that get you anywhere, with the minimum of effort. They bring the cherry on top of every ride and drive it all over town, if needed. For those know don’t know it yet, and they surely are few of them, Uber and Lyft take the place of a regular taxi and keep it high tech by functioning through an app that a customer can use to call for a ride from anywhere and to anywhere. Even if it is found only in the US, Lyft has raised $300 million in funding to date.

Even if they don’t need any particular thing to see their cars in traffic, Lyft has chosen in 2012 to put on the front of all its cars a pink moustache, furry at sight, and with a soft touch. Unfortunately, the drivers have had a lot of problems with it because of bad weather, carwash and other situations that involved water. As a result, Lyft has… lifted up a level by changing the furry moustaches into a glowing, neon pink one, banana-sized, that won’t be positioned on the front of the car, but inside, on the dashboard. The company told on Tuesday the story of cars and mustaches, the Lyft version.

“The new Glowstache marks an exciting moment for Lyft as we embark on the next chapter of our growth. We’ll begin rolling the Glowstache out to Lyft drivers across the country in the coming weeks.”

The new accessory has been named by the Wired Magazine in a very technical way: “mustache 2.0”. Its positive echo had impressed Lyft President John Zimmer in 2012, who enjoyed very much that it made people smile. Also, because it was irrelevant and whimsical.  But the change of perspective changed the design of the mustache because he thought that it was “this big, giant, fuzzy thing” and if someone in use of the car was going to an important business meeting, it might not have been the best way to roll up.

The reaction that people had to the furry mustache was drastic. They completely loved it or they say that they would never put something like it in their cars. The messy look that it always had at the end of the day was quite disappointing for the drivers  that had to deal with the situation. As a consequence, the new glow-in-the-dark, plastic mustaches will be available next week. Zimmer believes that they are “more modern, more fresh, and also more acceptable for everyone.”
