Google’s division of AI in London, DeepMind is currently testing artificial intelligence to reveal whether they could collaborate or they would turn against each other. Due to the fact that developers are responsible for testing the performance of the AI they had created, they need verify whether these machines are willing to collaborate with each other or they may fight for supremacy.
DeepMind has been concerned with this problem, examining what happens when two AI devices have the same goal or when they have different goals. The team of developers wanted to use the same type of test with as the “Prisoner’s Dilemma.” This is a game that determines two suspects to turn against each other.
The scenario presupposes that you testify against the other so that you could go free. Nevertheless, the other person needs to serve three years. But if you both agree independently, then you will both serve two years in prison. This is a dilemma for which you cannot find a simple answer to. For AI developers to test it, they used DeepMind which built two different games, Wolfpack and Gathering.
Gathering presupposed the use of two colored squares where each of them needs to pick up apples, collecting all of them in the middle of the screen. They also have a weapon which they can use to eliminate the opponent out of the game temporarily. The idea of the tests implementing these games is to figure out how competitive or co-operative some AI devices could be.
In the beginning, this pair of AI was peaceful and co-operative, gathering those apples at a steady pace. Nevertheless, as the pile of apples diminished, they started becoming more aggressive, using their laser weapons against each other to win. The AI agents were supposed to decide whether they should fail and then attack the other player.
Surprisingly, the AI device became more hostile because their computational power was increased. The rate if attacking each other increased, irrespective of the number of apples which were left on the screen. This method is actually simple. It is complicated to aim. The process asks for timing while tracking the opponent’s moves. If they had tried to concentrate on collecting apples, it would have been easier, but then the success wouldn’t be guaranteed.
