It’s been six months since Facebook’s Place Tips program has started its trial run and now it will be available nationwide. The feature uses Bluetooth beacons to show Facebook photos and posts about a particular business on the shopper’s phone while he or she is inside the store.
So for example if you are standing in line at a store and the store has a Place Tips beacon you will receive information and even coupons automatically on your phone. All you have to do is open your Facebook app and access the information. Pop-up notifications will show up at the top of your news feed.
In its trial period the feature was available in just some New York businesses. Now it will arrive in small and midsize stores all around the US.
Besides the fact that users will receive information about the company’s Facebook page while they are in the store, they will also have access to reviews on businesses which were checked by their friends. And, of course, they can also review businesses themselves.
Facebook has released a web app which enables store owners to apply for a free beacon for each of their physical store. The company has designed its own beacon which is created by an external manufacturer. Although beacons are not expensive it is impressive that Facebook is willing to create and distribute them for free.
Facebook has long claimed that it can target better than any advertisers on the Internet. Now this statement is reinforced with this update which offers location-specific ads and sends notifications to customers. Although retailers cannot use Place Tips to advertise yet the potential of this tool is undeniable.
This feature is very beneficial for small businesses because they can have more people talking about them on the internet. In addition sales and events would be promoted is such a way that it will be visible for the users. The information won’t get lost in the News Feed.
What companies have to do in order to benefit from this service is to get a Facebook business page and have a 6-centimeter Bluetooth device in the shape of a diamond place on the store wall. In order to access Place Tips users have to allow location with Facebook on their smartphones, turn on their Bluetooth. Place Tips will feed you information once you check it in settings. For the moment the app is available on iPhone devices.
