Users hailed the announcement, but content providers were not as enthusiastic.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg unveiled that Facebook’s top priority this year is to ensure users are happy on the platform. This can be easier achieved if you see pictures of your niece rather than an investigation into the Trump campaign.
The social media platform wants to get back to basics i.e. to focus overwhelmingly on communication between user. However, in recent years, it strayed away from that goal and started flooding the News Feed with sponsored content.
The move was supposed to keep people hooked longer periods of time and to boost the company’s revenue. However, users were displeased that the site had morphed into a news curator.
The Changes Could Drive Away Traffic
By switching focus to communication between family members and friends, the social media giant is going back to its roots. Manu Facebook users have complained about the media content that prevented them from connecting more with one another.
The company hopes that with less media content stressing people over, users will no longer perceive the site as a source of stress. Zuckerberg cited recent research that shows people who improve their relationships and social skills are happier and healthier than people whose relationships are a source of stress.
Zuckerberg acknowledged that the recent decision may bite deep into the viewership, but having happy customers will mean the business will thrive in the long term too. The company is apparently concerned that the negative atmosphere on Facebook may drive people away any way.
