If you have not heard by now, Facebook has its own Area 51 – Area 404. The difference between those two is that we know a few things about what is this social network going to do with that area and what can we found in there. Facebook’s area 404 is a lab focused on hardware engineering. Let’s find out more about this subject.
Facebook’s brilliant minds thought that it should be more than just a simple social network. It should make a difference in the tech world. So this is the main reason why Area 404 appeared. This lab has two spaces: one regarding the electrical engineering and the other one for prototyping workshops. By creating this space, Facebook hopes to achieve its goals by creating a new generation of improved hardware.
Facebook’s area 404 is located in its headquarters, having an impressive size of 22 000 square foot. The main discoveries this area will make are about solar drones, internet-beaming lasers or virtual reality headsets, such as Oculus Rift, which has a great success on the market. Facebook’s team has this goal: to allow as many people as possible to log into Facebook at the same time. This thing implies more phones, a higher internet speed and a better use of radio spectrum. So it is not a surprise that Area 404 appeared.
Why is the area called like that? The idea of the name comes from the error 404. We all know this error, that appears when we want to visit a page that cannot be found. A similar thing happened to this area. The engineers wanted a space like this for a long time, but it could not be found. Until now.
We will see if Facebook’s area 404 will achieve its goals and what changes will happen in the tech world. What is important to know is that this area will not be a mass-producing one or, at least, that is not the plan for the moment. It will only help the company to fulfil its long-term plans: connecting more and more people, building virtual-reality and making drones that deliver internet signals all over the world.
