Google announced it will soon improve backup on Google Drive, which might have the potential to make it the preferred solution for cloud storage. These improvements will allow you to choose any location you want to perform backup on. You will be able to choose anything from your desktop, even entire folders, and keep a close monitoring of them.
Improvements to Google Drive, but not for corporate storage
On June 28th, Google will release the new backup tool, called Backup and Sync. Most probably, this tool will replace not only Google Drive, but also the Photos Backup app, but Google did not reveal anything yet. Once it will come out, all users should download the tool and have the former services replaced.
However, Google advises business users, such as those who use G Suite, to stick to Google Drive, at least for the moment. They will develop another tool specialized for corporate storage, namely Drive File Stream. This tool will allow these people to access large amounts of data without having to burden their hard drives.
Google needs to overpass the rival Dropbox
At the moment, the company didn’t reveal much on what the new tool does. It will probably resemble Google Drive quite well in terms of opening files and editing them. However, the tech giant didn’t elaborate on the possibility of syncing files between computers. Even so, this feature must be present, but Google will offer more details as the tool is ready for launch.
Also, the new tool will probably have a storage limit similar to that of Google Drive, namely 15 GB. More storage space is also available, but users have to pay for a more advanced backup version. Even with such a relatively small offer for free accounts, this is still a smart move by Google.
Google Drive needs to step up against the rival Dropbox, whose syncing method might not seem practical. However, its users requested similar features to those prepared by Google for the new tool, so bringing as many improvements as possible is vital for Drive.
