Google Drive implemented several new updates on March 9th, being bound to attract more businesses. During the Cloud Next conference focused on enterprises, Google has announced the new set of features which will transform their product into one more suitable for business, even being more attractive for regular consumers.
The most significant improvement brought to Google Drive is Team Drives. This is part of a shared cloud folder which can be used by employees to put their notes and files into it. Nevertheless, the ownership and permission structure on these records may become pretty tangled. For instance, if someone decided to leave the company, the files they had uploaded to the shared cloud may disappear.
Team Drives is bound to provide everybody access to the folder, mainly being a co-owner of the documents. Nevertheless, there are more enterprise announcements made by Google. Google Drive is prone to extend its “Vault” feature, making it easier for managers to control and export data through Google Drive.
Moreover, it has also purchased AppBridge, a business which helps other enterprises switch to Google Cloud from Sharepoint or other similar services they might be using. Now, Google will be able to provide these services directly. This represents the primary enterprise-centered feature. For users, the most important characteristic is “Drive File Stream.”
This was designed to help consumers install Google Drive on their Mac or PC because it will not download all the files. Nevertheless, it will try to guess the ones that you need, making the rest available on-demand. This new feature implemented by Google is similar to the Smart Sync feature of Dropbox.
Unfortunately, this is only available as being part of the early adopter program of Google. The other consumer feature is named “Quick Access.” This was previously available only on the main screen before searching for it. Users need to keep in mind the fact that none of these features are necessarily innovative ones. When it comes to Drive File Stream, it is known to be an old characteristic.
Nevertheless, all the features, old and new, put together indicate that Google is developing into a more serious service when it comes to G Suite again. Google decided to start with some of the most significant points, managing file storage and ownership on users’ PCs.
