They have had their moments, the Chromecast caught us off guard and the switch from Key Lime Pie to KitKat caught everyone by surprise. It appears the Google smartwatch, codenamed Gem, may fall into the Nexus 5 category if Google are not careful.
This is the first real leak we have heard since the rumor Google is preparing a set-top box, gaming console and smartwatch for an October release. Nothing new has been heard about the game console, but the smartwatch is still a go according to insider sources.
The smartwatch should be Nexus, meaning Google will add the latest version of Android and it will get updates almost instantaneously from the provider, we have no details currently on the manufacturer, it could be Google’s own hardware division.
As for the date, reports say Google will launch the smartwatch alongside the LG Nexus 5, Nexus 10 and Android 4.4 on October 31. We wonder if these are the only new products coming from Google, or will we see the new set-top box, an apparent successor to the Nexus Q.
Smartwatches are still in their youth as a market, Pebble did start the trend off with 100,000 backers and still manages to sell a few on the side with software updates. Now we have the Sony Smartwatch 2 and Galaxy Gear contending for a place as the number one smartwatch.
Google may be able to bring some functionality to a smartwatch, including advanced notifications and fitness applications. We are still waiting on Apple to bring the iWatch and the possibility of someone like Jawbone developing a FitBit with smartwatch functionality.
