Every gadget producer wants to be in the first lines of the battle and LG G Watch R is the Korean company’s attempt in this respect. The industry learned a lot from Apple’s iPhone success story from 2007. This is not the moment to be shy or take extended periods of time to do extensive research. Established tech-producers want to replicate the iPhone success as a new type of device and the introduction of a new type of gadget is the proper moment.
Although smartwatches are already on the market, for example Sony and Samsung already sell them for a couple of years, there is a new layer of hype around the next wave of smartwatches. Android Wear is now available for producers, so they will be able to add increased functionality to devices. The main battle is based on two equally important criteria.
First, designing a smartwatch is even more important than designing a smartphone. The latter type of gadgets already reached an established industry wide consensus – the rectangular shape. The advantages are clear and without any technological paradigm shift, there are few reasons to change it. On the other hand, smartwatches are a very visible type of gadgets, and take further the classical role of the watch as a fashion accessory.
However, a second criteria comes to play. Android Wear will provide enhanced experience for smartphone users. The two devices will pair and offer added value by talking the same language.
LG G Watch R takes on Moto 360
Motorola already announced an event taking place on September 4. At the media event, Motorola will launch the new Moto X+1, Moto G2, an earpiece and the Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch. The first images of Moto 360 are convincing, as the round shaped smartwatch conveys elegance. Moto 360’s specs have already been mistakenly released by Best Buy.
LG must have been convinced of the design as well, because the Korean producer will introduce a round shaped smartwatch in September as well. Until the IFA event in Berlin, we can have a look at the new LG G Watch R.
The teasing YouTube video launched by LG clearly takes a shot at the Moto 360. Motorola’s smartwatch, although completely round, does not use the whole space. A small part close to the edge is not usable due to technical characteristics. LG shows a watch with Moto 360 display shape, which turns into a complete circle.
