It seems that this year even L’Oreal Gets Technical, bringing its products at the International CES in Las Vegas.
The product presented on Wednesday by the cosmetics company is a wearable tech similar to a plaster or with a temporary tattoo which informs the wearer about their UV exposure.
The product has been created in partnership with the Irish company PCH – the company who has also made a cocktail-style ring which gets your calls, texts and calendar events.
The new product has been named My UV Patch. It is a one-inch heart-shaped sensor which can be stick on your skin just like a Band-Aid containing flexible electrons. My UV Patch pairs with an app to tell you how much UV exposure you are getting during different times of a day and how dangerous that is for your skin’s health.
The small heart-shaped sensor has a simple design featuring some blue squares which will fade as your skin gets more UV radiation.
The patch is water-resistant and it can be worn at the beach and even in the shower. It lasts for about five days and at the end it can be peeled off and thrown away, being environmentally safe.
Users can download an app for both Android and iOS which allows you to scan the patch and it will ‘read’ its data, telling you when you are most at risk and also what you can do about it.
More patches can be used at the same time in different parts of the body but L’Oreal advises its customers to wear it at the back of their hand.
My UV Patch will come to the market by the end of this year and it will be given away with L’Oreal’s line of products La Roche-Posay. By educating users about the risk of UV exposure L’Oreal might see sellings increase in their sun-protection line of products.
L’Oreal and PCH will make about 10 products together in the following years. The company believes that smart wearables are the future of beauty products.
However, middle age women and men are already thinking that a heart-shaped patch with blue squares is not something they would wear on the back of their hand especially when they are at the workplace. This will make it impossible for them to track the UV exposure they get during an usual day, which is one of the most important applications of My UV Patch.
